ONLINE COMPUTER SYSTEMS SHIPS ITS NEW NLM VERSION -- THE LATEST
OFFERING IN ITS OPTI-NET FAMILY OF CD-ROM NETWORKING SOFTWARE
/ADVANCE/ GERMANTOWN, Md., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Online Computer Systems, Inc., announces it is shipping the NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) version of its OPTI-NET CD-ROM networking software product. The OPTI-NET NLM version is the newest addition to a complete line of products that allows users of local area networks (LAN) to share information stored on CD-ROM.
The OPTI-NET NLM version allows up to 100 users to simultaneously share Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) CD-ROM drives on a Novell NetWare 386 version 3.x local area network. Running as a NetWare Loadable Module on a version 3.x file server, OPTI-NET NLM capitalizes on the open architecture and flexibility of NetWare 386, extending the server's functionality with the ability to manage and share CD-ROM drives.
Multiple controllers, adhering to the Advanced SCSI Programming Interface (ASPI) standard, and CD-ROM drives attach directly to the file server. OPTI-NET NLM emulates a standalone or non-networked workstation to provide compatibility with CD-ROM applications. Integrated features such as SCSI Bus Disconnect/Reconnect, caching and data prefetch greatly increase CD-ROM server performance while placing minimal load on the file server.
The networked CD-ROM workstations are not required to load the network shell (NEXT.COM) or log into the file server to use OPTI-NET. Removable OPTI-NET device drivers and a removable Microsoft Extensions Terminate-and-Stay-Resident (TSR) allow users to free valuable memory without rebooting their workstations when they are finished with their CD-ROM session.
The OPTI-NET NLM memo-driven management console allows the administrator to monitor, control, and configure the CD-ROM server while it simultaneously serves users. The console also provides the administrator access to context sensitive help. OPTI-NET NLM allows systems administrators to create batch files that automate the process of networked users accessing and executing CD-ROM applications. Users need only know the name of the application they wish to access.
The OPTI-NET NLM version is available for a price of $1,495 for a 100 workstation license (a 100 workstation license for the Microsoft Extensions is included). It will be demonstrated at Booth No. 420 at the CD-ROM Expo tradeshow in Boston Sept. 30 through Oct. 2.
