Office of Naval Intelligence

Systems Corp. (Nasdaq:ONIS), a leading provider of optical telecommunications systems for the metropolitan and regional markets, today announced the general availability of OPTX(TM) Software Suite, release 4.0. Featured in the new release is the evolution of the OPTX Element Management System (EMS) to the OPTX Network Manager, a software management system that delivers augmented capabilities for end-to-end management including single-step, network-wide wavelength provisioning and SONET Add/Drop Multiplexer A device installed at an intermediate point on a transmission line that enables new signals to come in and existing signals to go out. In a typical example, most signals pass through the device, but some would be "dropped" by splitting them from the line.  (ADM See add/drop multiplexer.

) path management.

The OPTX Software Suite 4.0 extends ONI's advanced A-to-Z provisioning capability to automate provisioning of services that traverse multiple subnetworks. Operators can now provision an optical service across multiple rings and through the long-haul core in a single step. From a remote network operations center See NOC.

Network Operations Center - (NOC) A location from which the operation of a network or internet is monitored. Additionally, this center usually serves as a clearinghouse for connectivity problems and efforts to resolve those problems.

Also called a "network management center" (NMC), "service management center" (SMC) or "network control center" (NCC), a NOC may be used to manage a large enterprise network, ) OC-3 through OC-192, Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  and other optical services can be delivered, in seconds, across multiple metropolitan locations and coast-to-coast through the long-haul core with a few clicks.

The OPTX Network Manager also delivers newly integrated SONET path management alongside existing wavelength management capability. ONI customers can now provision layered SONET-over-DWDM and Gigabit Ethernet-over-DWDM services from a single platform. Included in the new release are features to help service providers optimize capacity utilization Capacity Utilization measures the rate at which a firm makes use of their capital productive capacities, such as factories and machinery. Capacity Utilization generally rises when the economy is healthy and falls when demand softens.  such as a graphical SONET channel map view. The advanced provisioning capabilities are available to operators through an intuitive graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to
as well as through a standards-based CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  interface for integration into third party provisioning and service management systems.

"It's easy for our customers to justify the purchase of ONI Systems relative to our competition based simply on the superior optical services capability and lower costs of the ONLINE equipment," said Teresa Engelhard, vice president, Software Solutions, ONI Systems. "But savvy customers appreciate the importance of considering total lifecycle costs. Given this, they have rigorous requirements for OPTX software to help drive reductions in their operational costs and speed time to revenue through advanced automation."

The OPTX Software Suite is a modular, plug-and-play solution whose products may be used in combination to design, turn-up and manage a network, or as stand-alone modules integrated into a multi-vendor operations environment. In addition to the OPTX Network Manager, the OPTX Software Suite includes:
-- OPTX Network Designer, a network engineering and planning tool for optical
layer design, simulation and planning. OPTX Network Designer utilizes over 350
embedded engineering rules to simplify the complex processes of optical system
design, perform full physical simulation, and automate system configuration.

-- OPTX Management Portal, a customer network management application that
delivers securely partitioned control to customers via the Internet. OPTX
Management Portal enables carriers to deliver differentiated Virtual Private
Optical Network (VPON) services by giving customers control over capabilities
including fault management, performance monitoring and service activation.

-- OPTX Automation Engine, an express turn-up and configuration tool that
downloads OPTX Network Designer configuration models directly into the
ONLINE(TM) transport platform equipment.

-- OPTX Graphical Craft Interface Terminal (CIT), a graphical tool for turn-up
and troubleshooting of the ONLINE transport platform that includes full fault
configuration, performance and security capabilities. Allowing direct access to
equipment from a workstation or portable PC, the OPTX Graphical CIT supports
the initial turn-up of the system, local provisioning and maintenance.

-- OPTX CORBA Gateway, a "northbound" CORBA gateway for use with the Network
Manager that allows OPTX automation to be integrated into varied operational
support system (OSS) and network management system (NMS) environments. The
two-way interface implements a standard Telemanagement Forum (TMF) information
model and supports the full range of FCAPS features.

-- OPTX Network Operating System (NOS), embedded software in each ONLINE
network element that provides advanced control of the ONI optical layer,
including embedded subnetwork level control, management and database; automatic
optical power balancing; automated protection switching; and control over
tunable circuit packs.

About ONI Systems

ONI Systems (Nasdaq:ONIS) develops, markets and sells optical networking Communications between computers, telephones and other electronic devices using light. An optical network is far more reliable and has far greater potential transmission capacity than networking in the electrical domain.
