ONE-WEEK SHUTDOWNS FOR QUNO MILLS

ST. CATHARINES, Ontario, Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- In view of high publisher newsprint inventories in North America, QUNO Corporation today announced shutdowns at each of its two newsprint mills for one week.
The company's Thorold, Ontario, mill will shut down for seven days the week of Oct. 25, and the Baie-Comeau, Quebec, mill's seven-day shutdown will be the week of Nov. 1. These will reduce the company's production by 16,000 tonnes.
With the continuing oversupply of newsprint, high customer inventories, and no growth in demand, the shutdowns are necessary for inventory correction. Including earlier shutdowns and reductions, QUNO will have reduced its total production in 1993 by 54,000 tonnes.
QUNO Corporation is the seventh largest manufacturer of newsprint in North America, with a total capacity of 815,000 tonnes.
