 10 artists to paint 55-gallon metal trash receptacles in a new ``Art On the Trash Can'' project.

Michael Marks of the city's Arts and Events Office said he was at a meeting where a representative of the artist's association had the idea of doing a special painting program on trash cans.

``She said it would help the artists and help get the area cleaned up at the same time,'' Marks said. ``I thought it was great and the city agreed to support it.''

He looked into the cost of 55-gallon drums such as those used in city parks and figured that the arts project would be the perfect way to enhance the Newhall Arts and Theater District in downtown Newhall.

``We have two themes, the history of the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  or The Street As An Art Gallery, which is wide open to give artists a chance to be creative,'' Marks said.

Artists will execute their visions in one of two themes; they can depict scenes from the valley's history or they can create a work of art from their own vision, making the street their art gallery.

While creativity is encouraged, artists are asked to consider that their work will be seen by people of all ages. The city will remove any completed work if it is deemed necessary.

Cans will be on display along San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  between Lyons Avenue and 5th Street. If selected, artists will receive $500 for their artwork.

Completed applications must be postmarked no later than June 1. Artists will be selected by judgment of the Old Town Newhall Association, the Downtown Main Street Association and the Santa Clarita Arts Advisory Committee.
