PALMDALE -- The Southland's record-setting cold snap over the weekend had most Antelope Valley residents huddled under blankets in their living rooms.

John Sarmiento and his 8-year-old daughter Alyssa and son Ethan, who is 6, took a different approach.

Amid temperatures in the mid-40s and a high-30s wind-chill factor, the Sarmiento threesome braved the elements Monday at Desert Aire Golf Course.

``We were a little concerned at first, but it was fun,'' John Sarmiento said.

The National Weather Service predicts a warming trend later this week, but the relief can't come soon enough for the Antelope Valley, which experienced some of the coldest weather since the NWS began recording area temperatures in the 1970s.

Lancaster's 3-degree low early Sunday morning shattered a Jan. 14 record by seven degrees, and came within a degree of the lowest recorded temperature in Antelope Valley recorded history -- the all-time low was set on Dec. 24, 1984.

Palmdale's early-morning low of 10 degrees broke a Jan. 14 record by three degrees.

Temperature records were set throughout the Southland.

``It was a very good weekend for the (record) books,'' NWS meteorologist Jamie Meier said.
