Founded in 1983 by Gwen Willhite and based in Plano, Texas, the company's first franchise opened in 1987.  in Westlake Village, tries to do something special for the community nearly every month.

Starting this week through Nov. 20, employees at Cookies by Design will give away a free gourmet cookie to each customer who brings in canned goods. The food will be donated to Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank in Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  in time for Thanksgiving.

In August she held a drawing and gave away a cookie bouquet each week and held a coloring contest, giving away a cookie to each child who participated. In September, to feature a regular customer who had written a children's book, she held a book signing and gave the children who who attended cookies in the shape of characters in the book.

In October the cookie shop held a contest with a local radio station and encouraged people to draw and send in pictures of their bosses for National Boss Appreciation Day on Oct. 16. The winning artist and boss each won seven cookie bouquets each month for a year - which has a retail value of $1,200.The Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank is the current recipient of her generosity.

``Doing things like this is good for the community,'' Hendrickson said. ``Manna has been a good charity and the bottom line is there is so much food on so many people's plates, but there are so many others who don't have anything.''

Canned good donations may be brought to Cookies by Design from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday or 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at 3671 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Westlake Village. The store is closed Sunday. Call (805) 446-1131 for more information.
