Lake Mead, the sprawling body of water formed by the construction of Hoover Dam Hoover Dam, 726 ft (221 m) high and 1,244 ft (379 m) long, on the Colorado River between Nev. and Ariz.; one of the world's largest dams. Built between 1931 and 1936 by the U.S. , will get a new tourist attraction starting April 1: jet ski tours. The National Park Service has approved the tours for adults and children as young as 12, with riders wearing two-way radio headsets enabling them to hear a guide's description of the area's history, geology and wildlife. The tours, which will depart from near Lake Mead Marina, also will include viewing and descriptions of Hoover Dam.

The company operating the water trips, Lake Mead Jet Ski Tours, an affiliate of Lake Mead Cruises, says participants need not be experienced watercraft operators. Instruction will be provided for riding the three-person watercraft, and speeds for the two-hour trips will average 30 mph. Tour groups will be limited to 25 people. The trips, priced at $189 per watercraft, based on two riders, including box lunch and pickup and return to a Las Vegas hotel, will be offered from April through October, or can be arranged by groups year-round.

  • Admiral William Standley State Recreation Area
 is taking registrations for its third Women in the Outdoors program, to be held May 14-17 at the Mendocino Woodlands Outdoor Center near Mendocino. The weekend program is designed for women over 18 to gain the knowledge and training necessary for successful outdoor adventures.
