ON Semiconductor Releases Industry's First High-Speed Multiple Signal Translator Capable of Converting Any Input Standard to NECL.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 10, 2003 Triple, Any Level(TM) input interface device simultaneously translates LVPECL LVPECL Low Voltage Positive Emitter Coupled Logic , LVTTL LVTTL Low Voltage Transistor Transistor Logic (AMCC) LVTTL Low Voltage Transistor to Transistor Logic , LVCMOS LVCMOS Low Voltage Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor LVCMOS Low-Voltage Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (family of logic integrated circuits) LVCMOS Low Voltage Cmos , HSTL HSTL High-Speed Transceiver Logic (family of logic integrated circuits) HSTL High-Speed Transistor Logic (electronics) , CML 1. At operating frequencies above 2 gigahertz (GHz), the device excels in high-speed applications and delivers robust performance in high speed medical, networking, telecommunications, automated test and instrumentation equipment. The advanced design and manufacturing technologies shared by the entire ECLinPS family keep skew and jitter at a minimum. Jitter for the NB100LVEP91 is typically below 0.5 picosecond One trillionth of a second. Pronounced "pee-co-second." See space/time and ohnosecond. (unit) picosecond - 10^-12 seconds. (ps) and output-to-output skew is 20 ps. The overall propagation delay expected of translation using the LVEP91 is less than 650ps. The device accepts Low Voltage Positively Referenced Emitter Coupled Logic Emitter Coupled Logic - (ECL) (Or "Current Mode Logic") A technology for building logic gates where the emitter of a transistor is used as the output rather than its collector. (LVCMOS), High Speed Transceiver Logic (HSTL), Current Mode Logic (CML) or Low Voltage Differential (hardware) Low Voltage Differential - (LVD) A method of driving SCSI cables that will be formalised in the SCSI-3 specifications. LVD uses less power than the current differential drive (HVD), is less expensive and will allow the higher speeds of Ultra-2 SCSI. LVD requires 3. Signaling (LVDS) signals, and translates them to differential -2.5 volt (V), -3.3 V, and -5 V Negatively Referenced Emitter Coupled Logic (NECL) output signals. The growing complexity of mixed-signal circuit designs has resulted in a dizzying assortment of interface standards between processors, controllers, Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASIC) and memory modules. The ability to easily convert between standards and facilitate the transmission of information with minimal loss to signal integrity is paramount in developing a stable, high-performance system. ECL allows for a low voltage interface with lower skew, faster rise and fall times, and significantly less noise than CMOS, providing an ideal means for transmitting high-performance clock and data signals across noisy back-planes. The NB100LVEP91 reduces clock and data management design complexity by serving as multiple translators in one package. Up to three separate signals in three separate interface standards can be translated at once and driven across a circuit or back-plane. The signal can then be converted back into the necessary standard to continue signal processing, using the superior skew and jitter characteristics inherent to ECL to ensure stable circuit design. Packaging and Price Packaged in a space-saving standard 20-pin SOIC, ON Semiconductor offers the NB100LVEP91 for $7.78 per unit in 10,000 unit quantities. The device also is available in wafer form to offer additional design flexibility. For additional technical information, visit http://www.onsemi.com/tech.
