) Linear Regulators In electronics, a linear regulator is a voltage regulator based on an active device (such as a bipolar junction transistor, field effect transistor or vacuum tube) operating in its "linear region" (in contrast, a switching regulator is based on a transistor forced to act as an . These 1 A to 3 A linear regulators offer output voltages down to 0.9 V and employ a special composite architecture that provides extremely fast (< 1.0 micro-seconds) dynamic (a.k.a., transient) response to changing output loads. Delivering industry-leading low noise performance without the need for a bypass noise reduction capacitor capacitor or condenser, device for the storage of electric charge. Simple capacitors consist of two plates made of an electrically conducting material (e.g., a metal) and separated by a nonconducting material or dielectric (e.g. , the devices help reduce overall system costs and free up valuable board space. Providing low ground current independent of output load, these devices reduce power losses. Output accuracies for all the devices are from sub 1 percent at room temperature and sub 1.5 percent across the operating range of line, load, and temperature conditions.

The Devices

The NCP3335A is a 500 mA LDO with enable. It is available with 2.5 V, 2.85 V, 3.3 V, 5.0 V and adjustable output voltages. Offered in a Pb-free Micro8[TM] package, it is priced at $0.34 per unit in 4,000-unit quantities. This device is also offered in a Pb-free 3 mm x 3 mm DFN-10 package priced at $0.36 per unit in 3,000-unit quantities. Additional voltage options in both packages are in development for release in 2007.

The NCP5661 is a 1 A linear regulator with enable. It is available with 1.2 V, 1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V, 2.8 V, 3.0 V, 3.3 V and adjustable output voltages. Offered in a Pb-free DPAK DPAK Discrete Packaging  package, it is priced at $0.35 per unit in 2,500-unit quantities. Also available in a Pb-free 3 mm x 3 mm DFN-6 package, it is priced at $0.53 per unit in 3,000-unit quantities.

The NCP565 is a 1.5 A linear regulator. It is available with 1.2 V, 3.3 V and adjustable output voltages. Offered in a Pb-free D2PAK PAK,

The NCP5662 is a 2 A linear regulator with enable. It is available with 1.5 V, 3.3 V and adjustable output voltages. Offered in a Pb-free D2PAK package, it is priced at $0.57 per unit in 800-unit quantities. This device family will also be available in a 4 mm x 4 mm DFN DFN Definition
