of discrete component An elementary electronic device constructed as a single unit. Before integrated circuits (chips), all transistors, resistors and diodes were discrete. They are widely used in amplifiers and other devices that use large amounts of current.  packaging, ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq: ONNN) today introduced three new Schottky and three new ESD (1) (Electronic Software Distribution) Distributing new software and upgrades via the network rather than individual installations on each machine.  need for ultra-small discrete devices A discrete device (or discrete component) is an electronic component with just one circuit element, either passive (resistor, capacitor, inductor, diode) or active (transistor or vacuum tube), other than an integrated circuit. ," said Mamoon Rashid, general manager for the Small Signal Division at ON Semiconductor. "Our portable product customers require smaller diodes and transistors for their power management, switching and protection applications to enable expanded feature integration in their portable products -- without increasing the size of their end products or reducing power efficiency. Introducing six of our most popular discrete devices in tiny SOD-723 packages is part of ON Semiconductor's ongoing plan to expand its miniaturized discrete product portfolio."

The Devices

The devices now offered in the SOD-723 package include Schottkys that lead the industry in lowest forward voltage (Vf) and reverse leakage current Reverse leakage current in a semiconductor device is the current flowing from that semiconductor device when the device is reverse biased.

The term is particularly applicable to a diode.
(Ir) performance, and ESD diodes that offer the highest level of ESD protection available in the 1.4 mm x 0.6 mm package size with package dimension of 1.4 mm x 0.6 mm x 0.5 mm, the SOD-723 package helps free up much needed board space in cell phones, PDAs, digital still cameras, notebook computers A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous. , consumer electronics, media players, etc. Compared to the SOD-323 package, the SOD-723 offers a 73 percent reduction in footprint and a 50 percent reduction in profile height. In comparison to the previous generation SOD-523 package, the SOD-723 delivers a 13 percent footprint reduction and a 28 percent reduction in profile height.

The devices are priced between $0.023 and $0.035 per unit in quantities of 10,000 units.
