OMRON Establishes Development Center in Shanghai; Operations to Start in October, 2006.

This new center will be one of the core R&D facilities for Omron. Mainly organized by local researchers and engineers, it will enable quick response to local needs and contribute to developing new technologies that will benefit the entire Omron group. Each year over hundred thousand highly educated and experienced exchange students return to China from the US, Europe and Japan, and a populardestination is this Zizhu Science Park. Also, it is adjacent to excellent research, educational institutes and Shanghai Jiaotong University where many talented students study.

Research and development in cutting edge sensing and control technology will take place. One of the main themes will be OMRON's vision sensing technology that recognizes human faces and various objects and shapes. The investment is forecast at US$9.7 million including real estate, construction of the building and infrastructure. Initially it will start with approx. 100 participating researchers and engineers concentrating on about 30 themes. OMRON plans to double both participants and themes by the end of fiscal year 2007.

Board Chairman Koichi Imanaka stated "We also position this new center as a gathering of universities, professors and grad students to motivate each other and develop new technologies, which we call 'Collaborative Innovation'".
