OMG Members Meet to Standardize Industry-specific Software in Manufacturing, Biotechnology, and Space/Satellite Computing.

Business/Technology Editors

NEEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 26, 2001

Members and Guests to Meet in Danvers, MA, USA from

July 9 through 13

Members of the Object Management Group (OMG (1) See Object Management Group.

OMG - Object Management Group
) will meet in Danvers, MA, USA, from July 9 through 13 to adopt software standards in manufacturing, biotechnology, space and satellite computing, and other areas. In manufacturing, a new standard defines Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Services and integrates this key piece of manufacturing software with the OMG's established Product Data Management (PDM) facility. In biotechnology, a new specification defines laboratory equipment control interfaces in OMG Interface Definition Language See IDL.

Interface Definition Language - (IDL) 1. An OSF standard for defining RPC stubs.

2. Part of an effort by Project DOE at SunSoft, Inc. to integrate distributed object technology into the Solaris operating system.
(OMG IDL (1) (Interface Definition Language) A language used to describe the interface to a routine or function. For example, objects in the CORBA distributed object environment are defined by an IDL, which describes the services performed by the object and how the data ), making compatible equipment accessible from CORBA-compliant software. Extending CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) A software-based interface from the Object Management Group (OMG) that allows software modules (objects) to communicate with each other no matter where they are located on a private network or the global  standards beyond earth's atmosphere, issuance of a new Request for Proposals (RFP (Request For Proposal) A document that invites a vendor to submit a bid for hardware, software and/or services. It may provide a general or very detailed specification of the system.

) will start work on a standard for the exchange of satellite command and telemetry data.

During the meeting week, members will also apply OMG's open, vendor-neutral, consensus-building process to extend OMG standards in software modeling including the Unified Modeling Language See UML.

(language) Unified Modeling Language - (UML) A non-proprietary, third generation modelling language. The Unified Modeling Language is an open method used to specify, visualise, construct and document the artifacts of an object-oriented software-intensive system

The Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM) is a specification for modeling metadata for relational, non-relational, multi-dimensional, and most other objects found in a data warehousing environment.
(CWM), the CORBA middleware platform, and industry-specific domain facilities. Expanding the scope of OMG's work, members have scheduled a discussion and a series of votes to complete the adoption of the Model Driven Architecture (MDA (1) (Monochrome Display Adapter) The first IBM PC monochrome video display standard for text. Due to its lack of graphics, MDA cards were often replaced with Hercules cards, which provided both text and graphics. See PC display modes and Hercules Graphics. ) as the base architecture for OMG specifications. Information about the MDA is posted at www.omg.org/mda.

Extending and maintaining the CORBA architecture, OMG members plan to issue RFPs to start efforts to standardize interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  between CORBA and the Java Messaging Service (JMS), and to update the mapping from OMG IDL to the still-widely-used language C. New specifications for data-parallel CORBA, security domain membership, and a dynamic scheduling service for real-time CORBA applications, their evaluation by OMG members now complete, will start the series of votes leading to final adoption. In the modeling arena, a new RFP will be issued for a profile defining software test points in UML models, and a new specification for Software Process Engineering Management will start its series of votes leading to final adoption.

Exclusively sponsored by IONA Technologies (www.iona.com), the meeting will be held at the Sheraton Ferncroft Resort Hotel in Danvers, MA, USA, about 25 miles north of Boston North of Boston is a 1914 poetry collection by Robert Frost. It includes two of his most famous poems, 'Mending Wall' and 'After Apple-picking'. Most of the poems resemble short dramas or dialogues. . Tutorials during the week will cover basic CORBA and recent developments including manipulation of XML documents as CORBA valuetypes; and basic and real-time UML. OMG meetings, with their large attendance, typically host workshops and topical gatherings. In Danvers, OMG will host two meetings and two workshops, open to interested non-OMG-members: Representatives from pharmaceutical companies and organizations will kick-off an effort to standardize software to manage the pharmaceutical supply chain. Information about this meeting is posted at healthcare.omg.org/pharmaceutical_initiative/. OMG's Utilities Domain Task Force will host a meeting of the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI EPRI Electric Power Research Institute
EPRI European Parliaments Research Initiatives
) Control Center API (CCAPI CCAPI Call Control Application Programming Interface (Cisco) ) task force, advancing interoperability in the electric power industry. One workshop, described at www.omg.org/lsr/oibc/, will discuss Objects in Bio- and Chem-informatics. The other will discuss software grids, and the challenges of flexible, secure, coordinated resource sharing within a dynamically-changing collection of individuals, institutions and resources. Information on this workshop is posted at www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/software_services_grid_workshop.htm.

Technical meeting registration information for guests appears at www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/guest.htm, and for members at www.omg.org/registration/registration-tc.htm. Meeting Highlights are listed at www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/meeting_highlights.htm. Agendas for Task Force and Special Interest Group meetings, and abstracts for tutorials, appear at http://www.omg.org/news/meetings/tc/agendas.htm. About The OMG

With well-established standards covering software from design, through development, to deployment and maintenance, the Object Management Group (OMG) supports a full-lifecycle approach to enterprise integration. Based on the established Object Management Architecture (OMA) and emerging Model Driven Architecture (MDA), OMG's standards cover application design and implementation. OMG's Modeling standards include the UML (Unified Modeling Language) and CWM (Common Warehouse Metamodel). CORBA, the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (standard, programming) Common Object Request Broker Architecture - (CORBA) An Object Management Group specification which provides a standard messaging interface between distributed objects.

The original CORBA specification (1.
, is OMG's standard open platform. OMG also issues the CORBAservices and a rapidly-growing set of industry-specific standards in vertical markets including healthcare, telecommunications, biotechnology, transportation and a dozen other areas. The OMG is headquartered in Needham, MA, USA, with an office in Tokyo, Japan as well as international marketing offices in the UK and Germany, along with a U.S. government representative in Washington, DC. The OMG is a major sponsor of the Integrate 2001 trade show and conference to be held September 19-21, 2001 in New York City New York City: see New York, city.
