OLYMPIC SNUB; I'll boycott the games vows Sports Minister McDaid in ticket row.

A BITTER row has broken out between Sports Minister Jim McDaid This article is about the Irish politician; for the Irish Republican Army volunteer, see James McDade.

Dr. Jim McDaid (Irish: Séamus Mac Daibhéad; born October 3, 1949) is an Irish Fianna Fáil politician and a doctor of medicine.
and the Olympic Council of Ireland The Olympic Council of Ireland or OCI (Irish: Comhairle Oilimpeach na hÉireann) is the national Olympic Committee for the Republic of Ireland. Following the Irish Free State's creation in 1922, the OCI's team has competed at each Olympic Games since 1924.  over how many friends he can bring to the Sydney games.

The Minister has now threatened to boycott the event, causing huge embarrassment to the country.

Dr McDaid asked for tickets for himself and three other people to travel to the games.

But the Council turned down his request, saying he could have three tickets in all.

Now the Minister has said he may not go to the Games at all.

He said: "I want us to be represented over there, whether by me or somebody else.

"And I will pull out if I can't get this country represented by John Treacy John Treacy (born June 4, 1957 in Villierstown near Dungarvan, County Waterford) is a former Irish athlete and Olympic medalist.

Treacy went to school at Cappoquin, Co. Waterford. He graduated from Providence College.
."

Dr McDaid is insisting that former Olympic silver medal runner and chief executive of the Irish Sports Council, John Treacy, and two officials from his department go to the Games.

But the OCI OCI Oracle Call Interface

has offered the Minister just three passes for the event - one each for himself, a personal guest and an official guest.

It is believed that Dr McDaid was furious when he discovered this. He then fired off a series of frank letters to the organisation.

This is just the latest incident in an ongoing feud between the Minister and OCI chief executive Pat Hickey Pat Hickey (Born - May 15, 1953 in Brantford, Ontario, Canada) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey Left Winger who played 10 seasons in the NHL for the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Quebec Nordiques and St. .

Earlier this year there was a row over sponsorship of the Irish Olympic squad.

Dr McDaid's office last night confirmed that it is in dispute with the Olympic Council Olympic Council may refer to:

  • Olympic Council of Ireland, the national Olympic Committee for the Republic of Ireland
  • Singapore National Olympic Council, a registered society
.

It also said that in previous years it has been policy for the Minister to travel with a party of three others.

Last May Mr Hickey said he would not invite the Minister to the Sydney Games, and that Mr McDaid would have to travel as a tourist.

Last night the OCI's general secretary Dermot Sherlock defended the latest decision, saying they were only allowed to give accreditation to three people.

Mr Sherlock also said that the council's aim was to co-operate with Dr McDaid in promoting the spirit of the Olympic Games Olympic games, premier athletic meeting of ancient Greece, and, in modern times, series of international sports contests. The Olympics of Ancient Greece

.

He said "There are 200 countries at the games and each one can have a minister for sport and there are strict quotas for guests of ministers.

"The Minister has asked for a party of four and the rules allow a party of three.

"The situation is that the Minister for Sport can have one personal guest and one official guest.

"There is no problem with the Minister having himself, John Treacy and one other.

"That is one of the rules of the Olympic Games.

"These rules are very strictly adhered to and it is extremely annoying to me that a spin of this sort has been put on it.

"It is once again making the Olympic Council out to be the bad boys because we are asking the Minister to apply the rules.

"John Treacy can be one of the three, there is no question about that.

to John Treacy personally or to the Minister or any of his party.

"It just happens to be that the Minister for Sport can have a party of three.

"It's up to him to designate who they are and we will immediately arrange for their accreditation."
