OLYMPIANS LOADED DOWN WITH MEDALS BASKETBALL, SWIMMING, TRACK ALL WINNING SPORTS.

``Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.''

That's the oath taken by all Special Olympians, and the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Sixty local athletes qualified for the games, competing in basketball, swimming, and track and field. A total of 85 medals were captured by the Sharks during the games, with the girls basketball team bringing home the gold for the third consecutive year.

The Sharks boys basketball team, which had spectators on the edge of their seats during the close final game of the tournament, eventually lost by one point to East San Gabriel San Gabriel (săn gā`brēəl), city (1990 pop. 37,120), Los Angeles co., SW Calif.; inc. 1913. Fabric, furniture, paper products, tools, and aircraft parts are manufactured.  to win silver medals.

 in tournament play leading up to the state games, and showed tremendous improvement in their ball handling, passing, rebounding and teamwork.

The Sharks swim team went to the games with a heavy heart after the death of team member Yevette Juarez in October. With angels embroidered em·broi·der

 on their swimsuits in Yevette's memory, the athletes swam their way to victory, earning a total of 12 gold, 14 silver and 10 bronze medals.

``The swimmers were determined to uphold the spirit of Yevette and compete with grace, dignity and strength,'' said head swim coach Sue Frisch.

Yevette's sister Angela Juarez, Kathleen Crow, Sean Iungerman, Jessica Puckett and Kristi Vogt each earned two gold medals in their events. Competing for the first time in the state games this year were Abir Saba, who earned two silvers and a bronze, and Nick Ramirez, who earned a silver in the 25-meter freestyle race.

Swimmers who learned new strokes this year and earned medals while competing at longer distances were Sarah Seibt, Ryan Latner, Eddie LeGault, Lisa Mendez, Jeana Rubio and Colbert Williams.

Saundra Wolfberg, the oldest member of the team at age 60, earned a silver medal in the 25-meter backstroke and a gold medal in the 25-meter freestyle.

The Sharks track and field team began the games with a gold medal by Bruce Bingham in the 400-meter run, and ended the games with a gold medal in the last event by Harry Dullman in the 400-meter walk.

In between, the team earned a total of 31 medals, including 13 gold, 12 silver and six bronze.

Outstanding track and field athletes were selected from the local team, with Dullman honored as the oldest athlete at age 65. In addition to his gold in the 400-meter walk, Dullman earned a silver in the 50-meter walk.

Youngest athlete was 12-year-old Keri Hartman, who earned a silver in the 400-meter relay, and received fourth place in the 50-meter run and the 100-meter run. Keri also received recognition for best improvement for her time of 13.73 seconds in the 50-meter run, three seconds faster than her previous best of 16.30 seconds.

J.J. Mikel was honored as best male athlete and Patricia Vare was named best female athlete for their track and field performances at the games, earning three medals each.

Started in 1968, the Special Olympics are played in every state and more than 150 countries. The mission of the program is to provide year-round sports training Sports training refers to specialized strategies and methods of exercise used in various sports to develop athletes and prepare them for performing in sporting events. Sports training methods  and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for individuals with mental retardation mental retardation, below average level of intellectual functioning, usually defined by an IQ of below 70 to 75, combined with limitations in the skills necessary for daily living. , cognitive delays or other significant learning or vocational disorders.

Volunteer coaches are currently needed for the Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  Special Olympics program in softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  and bowling.
