OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA WINS SCCA AND IMSA CHAMPIONSHIPS

LANSING, Mich., Nov. 16 ~PRNewswire~ -- Oldsmobile's spirited Achieva SCX was one of the success stories of the 1992 auto racing season. In its first year of competition, Oldsmobile's aerodynamic sport coupe won 12 races and three championships in IMSA and SCCA professional road racing.
Oldsmobile driver Chuck Hemmingson of Des Moines, Iowa, enjoyed a perfect season in the IMSA Automobile Magazine International Challenge with his Americare Achieva SCX. Hemmingson won every round of the five- race series and earned his second straight driver's championship. Oldsmobile wrapped up the manufacturer's title for the second consecutive year, scoring more points than Acura, Nissan, Volkswagen and BMW combined.
The front-wheel-drive Achieva SCX was also a front runner in the SCCA World Challenge series. Dave Jolly and Ron Emmick teamed up to put Jolly's Metalcraft Achievas in the winner's circle in four straight races. Jolly, a resident of Sacramento, Calif., clinched the Class C driver's championship with two victories and four runner-up finishes in the eight-race World Challenge championship.
Paul Hacker scored his record-setting 22nd career victory in the IMSA Firestone Firehawk Endurance Championship this season with his Castrol GTX Achieva. Paul and his brother Karl won three Sports Division races, including a 12-hour endurance race in Sebring, Fla., and a grueling 24-hour contest in Watkins Glen, N.Y. Paul, the defending Sports class champion, tied with Dodge Stealth driver Boris Said for the 1992 championship; Said was awarded the title on a tie-breaker.
Oldsmobile's advanced Quad 4 engine also starred in the SCCA Oldsmobile Pro Series. A production LD2 Quad 4 -- the same advanced powerplant that is available in the Oldsmobile Achieva -- propelled 23-year-old Tony Ave of Hurley, Wis., to five wins and the Olds Pro Series championship.
Oldsmobile Division designed the Achieva to turn fast times on the race track -- and to turn heads on the highway. With its wind-cheating body design, tenacious suspension, and high-revving W41 Quad 4 engine, the affordable Achieva SCX combines high performance with high value.
Oldsmobile's motorsports programs put the Power of Intelligent Engineering to the test in head-to-head competition with Oldsmobile's rivals in the marketplace. By competing successfully in production- based racing series, Oldsmobile engineers have accelerated the development of products that will ultimately benefit Oldsmobile customers.
