OLD-TIMERS' EVENT SET FOR OCT. 8.

Byline: BETTIE RENCORET SENIOR COLUMNIST

LANCASTER -- When September leaves start to fall, Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
old-timers turn their thoughts to the annual Old Timers Deep Pit Barbecue and memories of how it used to be.

The 79th gathering of people who've lived in the valley for 25 years or more will be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Poppy poppy, common name for some members of the Papaveraceae, a family composed chiefly of herbs of the Northern Hemisphere having a characteristic milky or colored sap.  Pavilion at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds n. pl. 1. same as fairground. , 2551 W. Ave. H.

``This is one way of listening to our older citizens,'' said Lancaster native Frances Lane, the barbecue's perennial publicity chairwoman, ``and doing that is the best way I know of learning. They've seen it all, experienced it all and love to pass it on to us if we take the time to let them.''

The ``picnic,'' as it used to be called, draws former residents who come back to join those who have remained and who look forward to seeing all the changes, as well as the familiar things about the area.

Friends who only get together once a year gossip about the news they've missed throughout the past year.

Special recognition will be given to the oldest persons attending, and those who traveled the farthest.

Old Timers Association President Craig Stevenson said the group tries to make the barbecue self-supporting, but is always grateful for donations to keep down the price of tickets.
