OHIO COMPANIES SUCCESSFUL AT MAKING CONTACTS AT MEXICO SHOW

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Ohio companies exhibiting food products at the 1993 "Festival De Alimentos Y Bebidas" food festival in Mexico City reported making contact with 376 potential buyers and distributors. Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA) marketing specialists estimate the Ohio companies that attended the show may develop $5 million worth of sales.
White Castle Systems representative William Blake felt the trip was a success. "Our intent was to go down, become better known in Mexico and meet potential distributors. We came away with a very long list of people with whom we could work," Blake said. "The trip was very well organized and went very well."
Thirteen Ohio companies made contact with buyers and distributors from not only Mexico, but also Canada, Costa Rica and may other South American countries. ODA assisted Ohio food companies interested in exporting products to Mexico by sponsoring the largest state pavilion at the food trade show.
A representative of the Sugar Creek Packing Company, Shawn Moorman, was optimistic at the prospects of developing international trade through contacts made at the show. "It seems an unlimited market exists in Latin America for our product (bacon) in that it has a lot of potential in restaurant and institutional businesses for bulk sales."
The show is sponsored by the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the United States Department of Agriculture and is one of the largest food shows in Mexico with more than 5,000 Mexican food buyers attending.
"Mexico is the third largest market for Ohio processed food exports following Canada and Japan," said ODA Director Fred Dailey. "Selling to this market contributes $25 million to Ohio's economy. With the prospect of the North American Free Trade Agreement being passed, it is even more important that Ohio's food processing companies have direct contact with Mexican buyers and distributors."
Mexico is one of the United States' largest and fastest-growing markets for such products as red meats, processed food products, poultry, dairy products and snack foods. Markets for Ohio products in Mexico are opening due to the growing affluence of Mexican consumers, proliferation of retail and food service outlets and a significant reduction in most Mexican tariffs.
