OH BROTHERS! TWINS TAKE SEPARATE PATHS TO REACH CROSS COUNTRY FINALS.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Twins Tom and Robert Kubler are the epitome of opposites.

Tom is analytical and reserved. Robert is Robert I, duke of Normandy

``I am a doer not a watcher,'' Robert said. ``I like to get up front and get down to business.''

Last season, Tom captured the Division V title and went on to win the state championship for Viewpoint's first state title in any sport. Robert finished 11th in Division IV and missed qualifying for the state meet as an individual by one place.

``Last year, we both started joking that it would be great if we both made to the state meet,'' Robert said. ``Now, it's starting to become a reality.''

As a sophomore, Tom was the best-known Kubler after finishing second in the state Division V meet and reaching the Southern Section Masters meet in the 3,200 meters in track. But Robert, who started as a hurdler before taking up the distances, has been gaining ground inspired by his brother's successes.

Robert finished fourth in the 3,200 in the Southern Section Division IV final in May. This fall, he turned in a 15:36 solo effort in a Division IV-V race in the Mt. SAC invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

Tom, the younger twin by five minutes, holds the edge at Mt. SAC by 19 seconds, and in track in the 1,600 (4:23.45 to 4:23.72) and in the 3,200 (9:16.98 to 9:26.06).

Robert, though, holds a 2-1 edge in head-to-head meetings. Robert, who both brothers agree has better sprint speed, has beaten his brother twice in the 1,600. Tom has won the only race at 3,200. There has been countless verbal sparring spar 1

``His main goal is to beat me,'' Robert said. ``I want to do the same. When I beat him, I was in his face jumping up and down. When he beat me, it was the first time I have seen Tommy ever really smile.''

On the three occasions, they ran together during the summer the training run turned into an all-out race.

``I want to run long distance and he wants to do a fast run,'' Tom said. ``It usually turns into a long fast run.''

Said father Douglas: ``They come home exhausted and sweating.''

Reducing comparison and competition and building independence was part of Douglas and his wife Katherine's decision to send the Robert and Tom to separate schools after the fifth grade.

Tom, who scored 1,530 on the SAT, carries a 4.2 grade point average and has accumulated more than a year of college credit through advanced- placement courses, chose Viewpoint, a 250-student private school in Calabasas that does not have a track team, for academics. An aspiring engineer, he would like to attend Dartmouth, Columbia or Stanford.

Meet days can get even more hectic with conflicting competitions but the elder Kubler has developed a democratic criteria.

``I try to get the closest one,'' he said.

Doug may need some earplugs but he will need to make only one trip to Walnut for Saturday's race and the state championships on Nov. 25 at Woodward Park Woodward Park (34 acres) is a public park, botanical garden, and arboretum located between 21st Street and 24th Street, Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. ``We'll be comparing times and who ran faster, but I'll be there to lend support,'' Tom said about his brother. ``He has been talking about some jaw dropping times in interval workouts. He had better be telling the truth. If he doesn't PR, he has some explaining to do.''

So will Tom.
