OFFICIALS TO LOOK AT REMEDIES FOR INTERSECTION; CALTRANS WILL STUDY PROBLEM ON HIGHWAY 14.

Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

Caltrans and California City officials plan to huddle Tuesday to determine how best to keep motorists safe at an intersection where a new median is confusing con·fuse

 many drivers.

The $1.45 million project, completed in April, added a median and widened a short section of Highway 14 from two to four lanes at California City Boulevard.

However, drivers are turning into the wrong lanes, prompting the state Department of Transportation to post flag crews and additional signs at the intersection to point motorists in the right direction.

Caltrans representatives plan to meet with California City's council to discuss interim solutions to the problem.

``What we want to do is make the facility safer for the public,'' Caltrans spokeswoman Karen Day said. ``We've had a few problems.''

Before the median and extra lanes were built, the intersection had been the scene of numerous serious accidents. On July 9, 1994, four Los Angeles-area residents died and two others were seriously injured in·jure

Beginning in 2005, Caltrans plans to build a full interchange for the intersection, allowing motorists to use a freeway on-ramp to access the freeway from California City Boulevard.
