LANCASTER - Sheriff's investigators are looking for a woman who dropped a newborn baby off Tuesday morning at Antelope Valley Hospital and then left before officials could get any information.

The woman brought the infant to the hospital registration desk and told employees that she had found her in a gas station bathroom.

``The staff took the child and when they returned to get more information, the unknown female was gone,'' a Sheriff's Department statement said.

The baby was African-American, about two hours old and appeared to be full-term and in good health aside from a low body temperature, 91 degrees, officials said.

Hospital workers said the woman who brought in the baby did not appear to have just given birth, deputies said.

Los Angeles County's ``Babysafe'' program lets mothers leave newborns at any county hospital or fire station without explanation.

``In this situation, however, the child was left unattended and without any thought given for her well-being,'' the sheriff's statement said.
