``We have to do this,'' Cher Thomas, CSU academic planning director said Thursday after a Long Beach policy meeting of CSU deans of education.

``And these teachers need to be in place by February. There's no ifs, ands or buts about it,'' Thomas said.

The education deans have agreed to:

Intensify efforts to recruit teacher candidates, including internships.

Establish local advising and service centers to help out-of-state teachers or those who haven't taught for some time to become credentialed.

Expand evening and part-time teacher preparation programs.
