a three-mile segment of the Pacific Crest Trail The Pacific Crest Trail (also known as the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail) is a long-distance mountain hiking and equestrian trail that runs from the United States border with Mexico to its border with Canada and follows the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada and  to keep hikers away from cars and trucks.

At the request of a trail group, the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Republican is seeking the funding to buy land and right-of-way to realign a segment of the trail that runs along Agua Dulce Agua Dulce is Spanish for "sweet water". It also refers to various locations:

In the United States:

Canyon Road - a section considered the most dangerous on the 2,638-mile trail.

McKeon made the funding request in letters to Rep. Ralph Regula Ralph Regula (born December 3, 1924 in Beach City, Ohio) is a Representative in the United States Congress from the 16th District of the State of Ohio, elected to his 18th term in November 2006. , R-Ohio, chairman of the House's interior subcommittees of the Appropriations Committee; and to Sen. Slade Gorton, R-Wash., Regula's counterpart in the Senate.

The letter, dated June 1, is signed by 12 California House members whose districts include portions of the Pacific Crest Trail.

``The Pacific Crest Trail is visited by thousand of people each year,'' McKeon said. ``But we need additional monies to complete the trail and make it safe. I am glad to see my colleagues agree with me.''

It probably won't be known until later this summer whether the funding will be allocated for the project.

The funds are being sought at the request of the Pacific Crest Trail Association, a 2,600-member organization that provides volunteer efforts to improve the trail and provides trail information for hikers.

The Pacific Crest Trail runs from the Mexican border to the Canadian border. The creation of the trail was ordered by Congress in the National Trail Systems Act of 1968.

A dedication ceremony marking the completion of the trail through Tejon Ranch 25 miles to the northwest was held five years ago, but improvements such as the Agua Dulce realignment re·a·lign

The funding is being sought from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund The United States' Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is a Federal program that was established by Act of Congress in 1965. The Act designated that a portion of receipts from offshore oil and gas leases[1] , a fund created in 1965 to support the creation of parks and habitat preserves.

The fund will receive about $400 million to $500 million in the 1999 budget, primarily through fees paid by companies for drilling off-shore for oil and gas.
