Villaraigosa said deploying officers to the malls will not divert resources from other traffic initiatives, such as towing illegally parked cars on major streets or assigning traffic officers to the city's 50 worst intersections during rush hour.

``This is something we can do to try to reduce the tension a little bit and help people get to where they're going and be able to spend more time with their families and friends, rather than in traffic,'' Villaraigosa said.

Transportation Department Director Gloria Jeff said she is able to assign the officers without interrupting other work because of the hiring program approved by the city this past year.

``We have enough traffic control officers that we are able to absorb this temporarily to help with traffic,'' Jeff said.
