More than 50 local runners will carry the torch from Castaic to Newhall.

Members of the Los Angeles County sheriff's and fire departments, California Highway Patrol, FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will participate. The event will run from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.

``The Law Enforcement Torch Run The Law Enforcement Torch Run Campaign to benefit Special Olympics began in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas and is the largest grass-roots fundraising movement for Special Olympics.  is a great tradition with Special Olympics,'' said Chris Clark, area director for the local chapter of the Special Olympics, a sports program for the developmentally disabled.

``The cross-agency efforts and generosity of the donations raised provide a tremendous amount of support to the athletes and get the community solidly behind its local athletes.''

The run is an annual event that involves some 3,000 law enforcement personnel and athletes to carry the Special Olympics torch through Southern California.

The run is designed to generate awareness of Special Olympics and the summer games, a three-day competition. This year, 1,500 special athletes from throughout Southern California -- more than 100 from Santa Clarita -- will compete.

The run helps raise money for the program along with other fundraisers including restaurant nights in which police officers serve as waiters and collect tips for the organization.

So far this year, local law enforcement agencies A law enforcement agency (LEA) is a term used to describe any agency which enforces the law. This may be a local or state police, federal agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).  have raised $33,644 for the Special Olympics. Their next fundraiser will be Saturday a chili cook-off from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jack Bones Equestrian Center in Castaic.
