In the other crash, Bergmann said, undercover narcotics detectives tried to arrest a suspect about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in an SUV that had been reported stolen. Police said a woman got out of the SUV and ran when the detectives identified themselves as police. A man in the SUV sped away, ran a red light and hit three cars at the intersection of Telfair Avenue and Sheldon Street, killing two women who were riding in one car that was nearly cut in half, police said. The suspect was critically injured. Police said there was no chase. ``There was no pursuit. ... He got in a car and took off,'' Bergmann said. Lt. Art Miller, a spokesman for the LAPD, also said the officers didn't have time to begin a chase before the SUV crashed. ``The officers at this stage don't appear to have done anything to provoke him to leave - other than the fact he was a bad guy in a stolen vehicle trying to get away from police,'' Miller said.
