A rookie police officer and a teen-ager suspected of stealing beer from a convenience store were shot to death in a gunbattle in an alley Sunday.

and rushed him to the hospital rather than wait for an ambulance, McBride said.

``Responding units saw he was fading quickly, so they made their decision to take him by police car,'' McBride said. ``He was still alive at the hospital, but they lost him soon after.''

The identity of the theft suspect, age 17, was not available. The teen-ager allegedly stole two six-packs of beer from a 7-Eleven in the 1000 block of South Fairfax Avenue, according to police.

Navidad, assigned to the Wilshire Division, leaves a wife and two children, ages 4 years and 5 months, McBride said.

He joined the force less than two years ago, and had been working the streets for less than a year, McBride said.

Navidad and his partner were driving north on South Fairfax Avenue when they stopped to check out a commotion outside the 7-Eleven, police said.

A clerk pointed them in the direction that the suspect had fled - to an alley west of the convenience store, police said.

Navidad's partner drove into the alley, where the officers spotted the teen-ager carrying beer, McBride said.

Shifting a six-pack under an arm, the teen reached inside a pocket, pulled out a gun and fired at the officers, who were still inside the car, McBride said.

Navidad returned fire. His partner scurried out of the patrol car and shot back from behind the rear of the vehicle, McBride said.

The partner was not injured. Police Chief Willie L. Williams Willie L. Williams (born 1 October, 1943) was chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1992 to 1997, taking over after chief Daryl Gates' resignation following the 1992 Los Angeles riots.  was at the scene Sunday night.

The shooting was the second involving a Los Angeles police officer in as many weeks.
