OFFICER OF YEAR HONORED FORMER CSUN ATHLETE TIM HILTON NOW A STAR DETECTIVE.

Hilton was selected by the Simi Valley Police Officers Association and will be honored at a number of events, including the Kiwanis Law Day Luncheon in Ventura on May 27 and the Simi Valley Police Department's annual recognition luncheon Nov. 16 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Coordinates:

``It is very meaningful to be selected by your peers,'' Layhew said. ``In just about anything he undertakes he usually comes out No. 1 in the process. He's extremely physically fit. It's something we look for in our personnel.''

Hilton won a football scholarship to California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , where he was a star wide receiver, and also played on the baseball and track teams.

Hilton said he felt very honored, but thought there are a number of his colleagues who deserve the award.

``I think this is a great place to be a police officer because we get such strong support from the community. Our citizens are really good about calling the police, and they support us strongly.''

Hilton is now a narcotics detective in the Police Department's Special Investigation Section and a member of the department's SWAT team. He won the Physical Fitness Award in 2004 in the Ventura SWAT Competition and holds the record for the fastest time on the department's SWAT obstacle course.

``He's a natural athlete,'' said Sgt. Stephanie Shannon. ``I think Tim is one of our highest-caliber officers.

``Tim's dedication to his education is reflected in the degrees he has received, and he makes the same effort in law enforcement. He challenges himself mentally in the classroom and on the streets. ... The community is certainly lucky to have an officer of his caliber.''
