``It kind of humbles you,'' Kilby said. ``I thank God I was there for Mrs. Simmons.''

Simmons, 59, and her husband were enjoying an evening out April 29 at Le Chene French Cuisine in Saugus. Kilby, 48, who was off-duty, was eating dinner with a friend at a nearby table when he noticed a frantic waitress begin to pat a woman on the back. The woman was having trouble breathing, and the waitress didn't know what to do. Finally, she yelled to restaurant patrons for help.

Thanks to 26 years of training, Kilby used the Heimlich maneuver and dislodged the food, giving the woman air to breathe.

A few days later, the woman's husband, who was too ill to help his wife, called the sergeant's supervisor, Kilby said. He praised Kilby's work, thanking the police officer for saving his wife who was his world.

Simmons' husband wanted to further thank Kilby, but died a few months ago. So, Simmons and the bank honored Kilby instead.

``He deserves all of the praise that is given to him,'' Simmons said. ``He (her husband) would have liked to have been there to thank Sgt. Kilby.''
