OFFICE SPACE ANCHORS AV COLLEGE'S SOUTH VALLEY PRESENCE TRANSFERABLE CLASSES OFFER ROOM FOR MORE THAN 600 STUDENTS.

The Antelope Valley
 College's second effort in two years at establishing a significant presence in the Palmdale area.

At least 19 courses with room for more than 600 students will be conducted on the third floor of an office building at 1529 E. Palmdale Blvd., with classes starting Sept. 13.

``There are some of the more popular courses we offer,'' college spokesman Steve Standerfer said.

The classes will include English, health education, algebra algebra, branch of mathematics concerned with operations on sets of numbers or other elements that are often represented by symbols. Algebra is a generalization of arithmetic and gains much of its power from dealing symbolically with elements and operations (such as , statistics, political science, psychology, business and administration of justice. Online registration will continue until classes start.

Nineteen courses have been announced at the Palmdale site but college officials hope to add more before Sept. 13 as faculty members become available, Standerfer said.

The leased space, just under 6,000 square feet, is enough for six classrooms.

The college is leasing the space for $111,024 a year for three years. The lease agreement has options that if exercised would add six years to the agreement.

The college hopes to add more space for Palmdale classes in the future. The college has the right of first refusal Right of First Refusal

The Palmdale building formerly held a medical clinic and county health worker offices, which have since moved to a new clinic at 40th Street East and Palmdale Boulevard.

More than 1,000 students enrolled at the college's South Valley site in fall 2002, when courses were offered at a former aircraft plant recreation center on Avenue P at 30th Street East.

The college has been working for several years to establish a permanent campus that would be part of a master-planned housing development south of Barrel Springs Road between 37th and 47th streets east.
