OFFICE CLUB STORES TO BECOME OFFICE DEPOTS; SIXTY-FIVE OFFICE CLUBS
TO CHANGE NAME, DROP MEMBERSHIP FORMAT ON MAY 5
DELRAY BEACH, Fla., April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Office Depot, Inc. (NYSE: ODP), the largest office products superstore chain in the retail industry, today announced that it is going to change the name of the company's 65 Office Club membership warehouse stores to Office Depot. Located in California and six other western states, the stores will undergo a name change and drop their traditional membership format on May 5.
The Office Club retail chain was acquired by Office Depot, Inc. in April 1991. Since last year's merger, all of the Office Club stores have gone through several major changes. The product assortment in each store has more than doubled, from 2,300 different products per store before the merger to approximately 5,100 top quality, name brand products today. The stores were also completely remodeled to accommodate the expanded product selection.
"After comparing Office Club's membership format with Office Depot's policy of offering everyone the same low prices every day, we decided that we could best serve our small- to mid-size business customers by eliminating the annual membership fee," said Mark Begelman, president of Office Depot, Inc.
"Once the decision was made to change the membership concept, we felt the 'Club' name might be confusing, both to our current customers and to those who are turned off by the membership format. By changing the name of these stores to Office Depot, we'll be emphasizing our new policy of guaranteeing low prices every day to every customer, and not just to members," Begelman added.
"Anyone can shop at Office Depot and take advantage of the unbeatable Office Depot savings, selection and service. At Office Depot, shoppers can save up to 75 percent off of list price on everything from basic office supplies and business machines to office furniture and computer hardware and software. Currently, with 246 stores throughout the United States and western Canada, Office Depot has the strongest buying power in the office products industry today, and we pass these huge savings right on to our customers," said Begelman.
