OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR DAILY NEWS ALL-AREA FOOTBALL TEAM AND HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SEASON.

Byline: Compiled by Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

MICHAEL HERRICK

QB, Valencia, Jr.

One of the area's top quarterbacks the moment he took his first varsity snap as a sophomore, Herrick raised his play further this year and led Valencia to its best season in school history.

His 4,065 passing yards ranked second in the state and fifth in area history. He also threw for 32 touchdowns. The 6-foot-2 junior became better at throwing deep passes yet maintained his accuracy with a 66.4 completion percentage.

Herrick will go down in area history as the quarterback to end Hart's Southern Section-record 65-game Foothill League winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

, the state's top-ranked team, in the Div. II final at Angel Stadium. But the resilient Herrick never gave up, passing for 350 yards and two touchdowns and running for another. He took the loss with maturity and an eye toward next season.

FIRST TEAM OFFENSE

JOSH PORTIS

QB, Taft, Sr.

Equally dangerous with his arm and legs, the 6-foot-4 Portis led area large-school passers with 36 touchdowns and threw for 2,219 yards. He added 12 scores and 783 yards on the ground. GARRETT GREEN

Statistics don't do Green justice unless examined closely. He passed for only 1,710 yards with 15 touchdowns, but he added 848 yards and nine scores on the ground. More important, he threw just three interceptions in 14 games to lead Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks to its second Southern Section championship in two years as starter.

Although 5-foot-7, Stuart put up a big performance in the City championship game with 33 carries for 222 yards and two touchdowns. One of three Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks players to start on all three championship teams (along with Josh Cordray and Cary Harris), Santa Croce anchored an offensive line that opened holes for two 1,000-yard rushers (Randle Harris and Rodney Glass). He also was one of the team's three pivotal defensive lineman, getting nine sacks and forcing two fumbles.

JAMERE HOLLAND

WR, Taft, Jr.

In his first year playing receiver, Holland used the speed he displayed in track as a sophomore to become the area's most dangerous deep threat. Of his 38 catches, 17 went for touchdowns. His 958 yards broke down to an impressive 25.1 yards per reception.

COREY ANDERSON

KAI FORBATH

He rushed for 2,157 yards and scored 33 touchdowns, seven in a Week 9 victory over Bosco Tech of Rosemead. Harris rushed for a season-high 305 yards in the Div. X championship victory over North Torrance.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

MILTON KNOX

RB/DB, Birmingham, Fr.

Rarely does a freshman have as much impact in prep football as Knox did. He started at defensive back and played a major role as the team's change-of-pace running back. As the season progressed, the 14-year-old's contributions grew. Knox rushed for 119 yards and masterfully mas·ter·ful

COACHES OF THE YEAR

ED CROSON, Birmingham & TROY THOMAS, Crespi

Midway through the regular season, neither Birmingham of Lake Balboa nor Crespi of Encino possessed records indicating championship potential.

Each team was 2-3, including Birmingham's 21-14 victory over Crespi in a game that went down to the final minute.

Croson and Thomas are similar in that they don't care

about records. They care about how their team is playing at the end of the season.

So Croson had the Patriots do what no other City Section school would: play four top Southern Section teams. Birmingham became the first City Section school to beat Hart of Newhall, but the Patriots lost to No. 1 Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks and No. 2 Valencia as well as City preseason favorite Dorsey.

Crespi, under Thomas, did what no other Div. X school would do: play a nonleague schedule entirely against teams from upper divisions. The Celts The following pages provide lists of nations or people of Celtic origin, arranged by branch of Celtic ethnicity or language grouping:

beat Div. II playoff team Palmdale but lost close games to Birmingham, Div. IV champion St. Bonaventure of Ventura and Div. II quarterfinalist Canyon of Canyon Country.

The losses mounted, but those games prepared Birmingham for the playoffs. The Patriots beat Dorsey for their second City Section title in three years. Crespi ended Lompoc's 23-game winning streak en route to its first section title since 1986.

Croson and Thomas have successfully turned around programs that were dismal before their arrivals.
