Byline: Mark Baker The Register-Guard

After the 14 boys had sprinted for the `W' in the middle of the Willamette High School Willamette High School is a school in Eugene, Oregon.

The boys of summer were indoors Saturday. No baseball diamond. No smell of freshly mowed grass or grass-stained pants for Mom to worry about. Just unbridled enthusiasm and an eager willingness to learn the fundamentals of the game - hitting, catching, throwing and fielding.

"We just want to get kids involved," said Howard Metzel, director for Willamette Area Babe Ruth.

Tryouts begin in February and coaches want to get the word out, said Don Leber, vice president of the Willamette Area Babe Ruth board.

Numbers were down a bit last spring, Metzel said, so the organization decided to hold a clinic while kids are out of school for the holidays.

"I just think there's a lot more stuff available to kids now," said Klopp, a 1974 graduate of Willamette High who will coach the school's varsity baseball team for the first time this spring after years of running the junior varsity junior varsity

"He's been talking about it for a week," said Jim Hendrickson, Josh's father, who has coached his son in Kidsports baseball the past two springs and plans to coach him in Babe Ruth ball this spring.

Other players were all smiles.

And the only thing that might have wiped the grin off the face of 9-year-old Alex Torres is if you had told him this was really a dental clinic.

"He put his cleats, his mitt, his helmet, his bat - everything, in his bag last night so he'd be ready to go," said Alex's mother, Debbey Torres.

Although he plays basketball and football, too, baseball is by far Alex's favorite sport, he said.

"Because you get to hit the ball and run bases and you get to tag people out," Alex said. "And more people should try out because we could use more teams."
