OFF-LEASH DOG PARK FAVORED; HUMAN PALS WANT PLAYGROUND FOR PETS.

Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  dog owners are enthusiastic about a city proposal to create a dog park where their four-legged pals can roam free.

``It's a great idea. I have a dog who likes to run and play with other dogs,'' said Leah Goodman of Valencia, among about two dozen people who responded to a Daily News poll seeking public opinion on the plan.

A city ordinance requires dogs to be on leashes and under control while in public. But officials concede that some pet owners don't have enough space for a bigger animal to play, sparking the idea for a dog park.

``This gives an opportunity for dogs to stretch their legs. A lot of us like our dogs to run and to socialize so·cial·ize

 with other dogs,'' said Rick Putnam, city parks chief.

While the proposal is still in the initial stages, some residents already are questioning whether tax money would be better spent on human recreation. But some respondents said they'd be willing to help foot the bill to give their pets a playground of their own.

``If people are concerned about money, I'm sure most dog owners would help with the cost,'' said Audra Goyette of Canyon Country.

 should help pay for a dog park. ``There are too many restrictions on dogs and, really, those companies should sponsor this,'' Wilson said.

Putnam said a report will be presented to the Parks Commission in August.
