Rexy Sexy, running on a muddy track for the first time, came from off the pace to beat Fun in Excess by 1-3/4 lengths Friday in the $105,450 California Breeders' Champion Stakes at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Alex Solis, Rexy Sexy covered 7 furlongs in 1:24 3/5 and paid $8.20 to win.

Fun in Excess, who led most of the way, finished second, with Fleet Lady another four lengths back in third.

Restless Appeal, the wagering favorite, broke poorly and finished last in the field of eight 2-year-old fillies.

``It's kind of difficult for 2-year-olds when the track is sloppy because you never know what they're going to do, especially when mud is splashing in their face,'' Solis said.

Solis also guided Fanjica to victory in the $69,400 Reloy Handicap earlier on the card.

Rexy Sexy's mild upset helped set up a pick-six carryover of $53,589 entering today's card.

Today: In Excessive Bull heads a 14-horse field of 2-year-olds in the $100,000-added California Breeders' Champion Stakes at Santa Anita.

In Excessive Bull, saddled by Bob Baffert, has been lightly raced, but he has already established impressive credentials. He won the Grade III Hollywood Prevue in November and placed third in the Grade I Hollywood Futurity earlier this month. He has won 2 of 4 starts for earnings of $164,972.

In Excessive Bull breaks from the No. 3 post for the 7-furlong race and carries high weight of 122 pounds. Corey Nakatani, who has ridden the horse in each of his starts, has the call.

Princely Price, who ran second in the Nov. 2 California Cup Juvenile while making only his second career start, is rested and ready. He broke his maiden at first asking.
