OEC, DIGITAL EQUIPMENT TO DEVELOP NEW CORBA-COMPLIANT TOOLKIT NEW PRODUCT OFFERS FASTER, EASIER, APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT

 SAN FRANCISCO, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Today Open Environment Corp. (OEC) and Digital Equipment Corp. (Digital) (NYSE: DEC) jointly announced plans to develop and market a new generation of CORBA- compliant, object-oriented client/server development toolkits. The toolkits will simplify object-oriented application development throug the reuse of code and rapid integration of existing applications across distributed computing environments.
 CEO Sundar Subramaniam, of OEC, commented, "Over one hundred of our customers have told us that object technology is their future direction. By combining OEC's three-tiered client/server technology with Digital's object-oriented ACA Services software, we will give customers a development tool that allows them to gain a competitive advantage by building strategic distributed object applications."
 Digital Marketing Manager, Al Cooley added, "Today many of our customers are searching for the best method to deploy client/server solutions based on open standards. A partnership with OEC will allow us to quickly bring to market a product that is flexible, scalable and prevents vendor lock-in, to significantly help customers develop distributed client/server applications."
 OEC's Open Distributed Environment (ODE) Toolkits are standards- based client/server development products based on a three-tiered architecture, to enable rapid application development and system integration across heterogeneous platforms and computing environments.
 Digital's Application Control Architecture (ACA) Services, upon which the new toolkit will be based, is CORBA-compliant software which reduced application development time through the reuse of code and integration of independent applications in a mixed-vendor computing environment.
 OEC, based in Cambridge, Mass., is a developer of standards based, three-tiered client-server development toolkits that separate applications into presentation, functionality and data access layers. ODE Toolkits support databases such as Informix, Sybase, Oracle and Ingres on a wide range of platforms including AIX, AP-UX, ULTRIX, Solaris, OS/2, Windows and Open VMS. Currently OEC has over 100 installed sites, including such customers as Unilever, Mobil Oil and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
