OBJECT DESIGN AND PROGRESS SOFTWARE ANNOUNCE STRATEGIC
 DEVELOPMENT/MARKETING AGREEMENT
SAN FRANCISCO, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Object Design, Inc., and Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS) today announced the signing of a strategic development and marketing agreement under which the two companies will integrate the PROGRESS 4GL and ObjectStore ODBMS. The agreement marks the first time a fourth-generation language (4GL) has been integrated with an object-oriented database management system (ODBMS).
The collaboration between Progress Software and Object Design will address the growing need of commercial IS users for tools that enable wide deployment of object-oriented applications. The joint product will speed the adoption of object technology in the business computing market by eliminating the need for traditional programmers and end-users to learn to write C++ code to access ObjectStore, the market-leading ODBMS.
"Progress Software is seeing significant interest from the commercial IS community in object-oriented database management systems," commented John Wark, vice president of marketing for Progress Software. "We believe an object-oriented database provides superior capabilities for handling applications with complex, nonrecord-oriented data. The collaboration between Progress Software and Object Design will enable programmers and end-users to develop business applications in PROGRESS that read and update information located in ObjectStore. This partnership will speed the deployment of object technology in the business world."
Development of a joint product, code-named the "Object Access Project," has already begun. The two companies demonstrated a prototype program at the Object World '92 Conference here this week, which showed the PROGRESS 4GL using data stored as objects in the ObjectStore ODBMS. The first product stemming from the collaboration will begin beta testing in the fourth quarter of 1992. It is scheduled to ship in the first quarter of 1993. Pricing, availability and distribution details were not were not disclosed, but will be announced prior to shipment.
"At Object Design, we have focused on building the highest performance, highest quality ODBMS possible. By partnering with Progress we are leveraging 10 years of experience in providing high- productivity development tools to programmers creating 'run-the- business' types of applications," noted William Blundon, vice president of marketing for Object Design. "The combined product will open the door for business applications to incorporate much more complex data models, from 3D graphics to hypertext."
In a related announcement, the two companies said that Progress Software has joined the Object Design Partner Program that also was introduced at Object World this week. Progress joins 12 other software companies as a charter member of the Object Design Partner Program. The program is designed to foster the integration of commercial development tools and class libraries with the ObjectStore ODBMS, in order to provide the widest possible choice of tools for ObjectStore users.
