OBJECT DESIGN AND DIGITAL EQUIPMENT CORPORATION'S POWERFRAME GROUP SIGN VALUE ADDED RESELLER AGREEMENT

BURLINGTON, Mass., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Object Design, Inc. and Digital Equipment Corporation's PowerFrame group today announced the signing of a value added reseller agreement, under which Digital will license ObjectStore(tm), the industry's leading object-oriented database management system (ODBMS), as the next-generation database for use with its industry-leading PowerFrame software. ObjectStore will act as a repository for the engineering and product information managed by PowerFrame.
The alliance represents the first use of object-oriented technology by a framework vendor and highlights the increasing acceptance of object-oriented technology in engineering design applications.
"Object-oriented databases provide frameworks with the ability to manage complex product information and allow large numbers of engineers to collaborate in workgroups," reported Art Clark, Digital's PowerFrame marketing manager. "PowerFrame needs a high performance database to support an interactive team of design engineers. We chose ObjectStore as our database engine because it consistently outperformed every other product on the market," said Clark.
Data management systems such as PowerFrame are required to manage the ever-increasing volume and complexity of information generated during the product design and manufacturing process. "PowerFrame is becoming a standard for many EDA users," said Ken Marshall, president and chief executive of Object Design. "By adding support for large teams, PowerFrame will quickly become a leading option for managing design and product data in a multi-discipline environment," said Marshall.
The ObjectStore environment is standards-based and delivers comprehensive support for C++, the programming language of choice for object-oriented applications. To preserve a user's investment in existing applications, ObjectStore also provides a smooth migration path to the ObjectStore environment for existing C and C++ applications.
ObjectStore provides distinct advantages for engineering and other applications that manage complex information like graphics and documents. It meets the high performance requirements of electronic computer-aided design (ECAD) applications, while minimizing the maintenance time and cost usually associated with proprietary systems.
PowerFrame is a design framework for managing data and associated ECAD and MCAD tools. The PowerFrame graphical user interface allows users to graphically browse their data and to quickly launch design tools. PowerFrame provides extensive data management features including configuration management, version control and the ability to maintain complex relationships between input and output data for each tool. As a design data manager, it increases design productivity by reducing the time engineers spend managing their data and by reducing the amount of rework resulting from the use of obsolete or incorrect data. PowerFrame is available on all major workstation platforms including Sun, HP, IBM and Digital.
