The Antelope Valley resident since 1934, Hurd died May 25 at age 84. The Lake Hughes Trading Post was built by Hurd's father, Joel B. Hurd, and a partner in 1925 as a frame structure. After the building burned in 1928, it was rebuilt with the assistance of the elder Hurd's oldest son, Joel W., using stone gathered from Pine Canyon, Lower Shake Campground and Bouquet bouquet a structure resembling a cluster of flowers. Canyon. Charles and Joel W. bought the store from their father in 1940 and took over its management. They sold it in 1970 when Charles retired. Charles later sold real estate and worked for a liquor store. Hurd is survived by his wife, Elizabeth ``Libby'' Hurd; children and stepchildren William A. Hurd, Robert Austine, Bob Matay and Jean Estes; and many grandchildren GRANDCHILDREN, domestic relations. The children of one's children.
