William Conn

VENETA - The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 1, at Rest-Haven Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Eugene for William Vernon William Vernon (January 17, 1719 – December 22, 1806) of Newport, Rhode Island was a New England trader who played a leading role in the Continental Congress' maritime activities during the American Revolution.  "Wild Bill" Conn of Veneta, who died June 25 of congestive heart failure congestive heart failure, inability of the heart to expel sufficient blood to keep pace with the metabolic demands of the body. In the healthy individual the heart can tolerate large increases of workload for a considerable length of time. . He was 88.

He was born July 14, 1917, in Salem and was adopted by William and Millie Harvey Conn. He married Melva Worden on July 4, 1936, in Eugene.

Conn worked for more than 40 years in the timber industry and several post-retirement years in a machine shop.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, William of Terrebonne and Stephen and Timothy, both of Veneta; two daughters, Virginia Gutman of Vernonia and Rebekah Lowe of Oakland, Calif.; a sister, Mary Williamson of Denver; a brother, George Hill of Prineville; 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. A son, David, died in 1976.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rest-Haven Memorial Park.

Former Eugene resident Thomas Lovell Johnston of Healdsburg, Calif., died June 15 of pneumonia at age 94. No service is planned.

Johnston was born Oct. 23, 1911, in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  to Thomas and Ruth Johnston.

He served in the Navy for seven years, including service in the South Pacific in World War II. A civil engineer, he became head of Air Force weapons systems construction management and later chief of research and design for the U.S. Weapons Systems and Structures Air Defense Systems Integration Division. He later was a research faculty member and professor at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. .

Survivors include two daughters, Diana Stratton of Healdsburg and Lanta Rasmussen of Logan, Utah Logan is a city in Cache County, Utah, in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 42,670, a substantial increase over the 1990 figure of 32,771. The estimated population in 2006 had increased to 47,660. ; a son, Cliff of West Lafayette West Lafayette, city (1990 pop. 25,907), Tippecanoe co., W Ind., a suburb of Lafayette, on the Wabash River; inc. 1924. A primarily residential city, it is the seat of Purdue Univ. , Ind.; a sibling, Lovell of Sacramento; and seven grandchildren. His wife, Helene, died in October 2002.

Chester Cowan Jr.

 Jr. of Eugene died June 9 of cancer at age 80. At his request, no service is planned.

He was born April 13, 1926, in Westport to Chester and Delilah Sutfin Cowan Sr. He married Evelyn Love on March 1, 1946 in Westport.

He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. He worked in the lumber industry for West Coast Lumber Inspection Bureau, as regional manager of the Western Wood Products Association and as a lumber buyer for Morgan Products.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Rick of Marble Falls, Texas Marble Falls is a city in Burnet County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,959 at the 2000 census.

Marble Falls is 45 minutes west of Austin and 85 miles north of San Antonio. Lake Marble Falls is part of the Highland Lakes, the largest chain of lakes in Texas.

Joe Hillestad

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 1, at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Eugene for Joe Hillestad of Eugene, who died June 25 of age-related causes at age 88.

He was born April 7, 1918, in Fort Dodge, Iowa Fort Dodge is a city and county seat of Webster County, Iowa, United States, situated on the Des Moines River. The population was 25,136 at the 2000 census. Fort Dodge is a major commercial center for North Central and Northwest Iowa. It is located on U.S. Routes 20 and 169. , to Thomas and Josephine Stanerson Hillestad. He married Dorothy Mae Uren on Dec. 8, 1940, in Missouri. She died June 14, 2004.

He served in the Army in France during World War II. He worked as a heavy equipment operator in civil service, retiring at El Toro Marine Base in California.

Survivors include two sons, Tom of Coburg and Tim of Garden Grove, Calif.; two grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren.

Joseph Conner

Former Coburg resident Joseph E. "Joe" "Quack Quack" Conner of Siletz died June 25 of severe progressive dementia at age 74. A private family service and inurnment will be in Idaho.

Conner was born Aug. 26, 1931, in Burwell, Neb., to Stephen and Helena Mohr Conner. He married Ruth Martin.

Conner had served in the Army. He worked as an electrician for Georgia-Pacific for more than 33 years.

Survivors include four brothers, Philip of Coburg, LaVern of Quincy, Wash., Claton of Fruitland, Idaho, and Calvin of Parma, Idaho; and two sisters, Alta Southwell and Anna Rickard, both of Portland. His wife died in 2003.

Daniel Gadow

SPRINGFIELD - Daniel Brian Gadow of Springfield died June 16 at age 60. The family chose not to list the cause of death.

He was born June 7, 1946, in Pasadena, Calif. He served in the Marines in the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam.  and had lived in Lane County for four years.

Louise Foushee

Louise Foushee of Eugene died June 24 of age-related causes. She was 80.

She was born Nov. 23, 1925, in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan, to Aime and Frances Gosche Bernier. She married Schlesinger Foushee in San Diego. He died in 1994.

She worked as a legal assistant.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Foushee of Bay City, and two grandchildren.
