He was born May 9, 1938, in Trinidad, Colo., to Rosario and Frances Thiessen Bernardo. He and his wife, Juanita, married in September 1981. He was born Oct. 10, 1942, in Vancouver, B.C., to Daniel and Helen Voss Hertz. He attended the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. and Harvard, earning a master's and a doctoral degree in science.
