Freda Laird

PLEASANT HILL - The funeral will be held today, Dec. 30, for Freda M. Laird of Pleasant Hill, who died Dec. 26 of age-related causes. She was 80.

She was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Pleasant Hill, to Warren and Lucy O'Connor Higgins. She married Raymond Laird on May 5, 1942, in Pleasant Hill.

Laird enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her son, Don, of Pleasant Hill; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A son, Bob Laird, died previously.

Today's service will be held at 2 p.m. at Buell Funeral Chapel in Springfield. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

Vera Donaldson

SPRINGFIELD - Vera Ellen Donaldson of Springfield died Dec. 28 of cancer. She was 73.

She was born Aug. 1, 1932, in Murfreesboro, Ill., to William and Amanda Williams Bennett. She married James Webster James Webster is the name of several notable individuals:
  • James Webster (senator), a former Senator of Australia
  • James Webster (musicologist), a musicologist on the faculty of Cornell University
 in 1948 in Eugene. They divorced in 1960. She married Lou Donaldson Lou Donaldson (born November 1,1926) is a jazz alto saxophonist. He was born in Badin, North Carolina. He is best known for his soulful, bluesy approach to the alto saxophone, although in his formative years he was, as many were of the bebop era, heavily influenced by Charlie  in 1963 in Eugene. He died in 1989.

She was owner and operator of Lou's Cafe in Waldport. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, gambling trips to Reno and in Oregon.

Survivors include her daughter, Lea Clayton of Vancouver, Wash.; her life partner of four years, Glenn Hiestand; two sisters, Imogene Olmstead of Illinois and Myrtle Heitzman of Eugene; four grandchildren; and one grandchild. A son, James Webster, died pre- viously.

No service is planned. Chapel of Memories Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Edith Westphal

SPRINGFIELD - The funeral will be held Jan. 3 for Edith Lucile Westphal of Springfield, who died Dec. 28 of age-related causes. She was 94.

She was born March 11, 1911, in St. Helens. She enjoyed gardening, needlework needlework, work done with a needle, either plain sewing, mending, or ornamental work such as embroidery, quilting, smocking, hemstitching, fagoting, some kinds of lace making (see lace), patchwork, and appliqué.  and genealogy.

Survivors include three daughters, Irma Best, Shirley Beade and Elsie Sharp, all of Springfield; two sons, Everett Weldon of Boise and John Weldon of Creswell; two sisters, Marjorie Lomax of San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay.  and Mildred Dyer of Preston, Idaho Preston is a city located in Franklin County, Idaho, United States. The population was 4,682 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Franklin CountyGR6. ; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Her spouses, Joe Rensing and Cyril Westphal, died previously.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ Church of Jesus Christ may refer to:

 will be held Jan. 3 for Mary Victoria Olguin of Eugene, who died Dec. 28 of age-related causes. She was 88.

She was born July 14, 1917, in Youngstown, Ohio

Youngstown is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The municipality is situated on the Mahoning River, approximately 65 miles (105 km) southeast of Cleveland and
, to James and Angela Moore Beckwa. She married Joseph Olguin on June 17, 1950, in Youngstown. He died Oct. 12, 1997.

After graduated from high school in Youngstown, she served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1945 to 1949. She worked as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell The Ohio Bell Telephone Company is the Bell Operating Company serving most of Ohio. They are a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T Inc.

Their headquarters are the Ohio Bell Building at 750 Huron Road, Cleveland, Ohio.
 and, after moving to Hollywood, Calif., she worked for Pacific Bell. After moving to Whittier, Calif., in 1954, she was a homemaker. She moved to Eugene in 1988.

She enjoyed crocheting, travel, professional baseball and football, particularly the California Angels and the San Francisco 49ers

    Her family will remember her "independent spirit, family priorities and her love of cooking Italian meals for friends and family.

    Survivors include her son, Joseph of Eugene; her daughter, Trina Donovan of Las Vegas Las Vegas (läs vā`gəs), city (1990 pop. 258,295), seat of Clark co., S Nev.; inc. 1911. It is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest-growing urban areas in the United States. ; five sisters, Gloria Mahoney, Katherine Sekula, Marie Bydo and Rita Kozak, all of Youngstown, and Delores Baharia of Southgate, Mich.; four grandchildren; and two great-grand- children.

    CRESWELL - A memorial service will be held Dec. 31 for Clifford Williams of Creswell, who died Dec. 27 of a stroke. He was 78.

    He was born May 20, 1927, in Flint, Mich., to Chester and Margaret Scarpellino Williams. He married Mamie Kapture on Nov. 8, 1947, in Flint.

    Williams attended school in Flint and, during World War II, he was stationed in Marseilles, France, while serving in the U.S. Army. Following the war, he worked at the General Motors/Chevrolet warehouse and advanced to management. After the family moved to California in 1957, he worked in warehouse management positions with Beckman Instruments, Air Logistics and Hamrock Industries. After moving to Creswell in 1991, he represented the Creswell Chronicle in advertising sales.

    Saturday's service will be at 2 p.m. at Creswell Presbyterian Church, with inurnment at Creswell Pioneer Cemetery. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove is in charge of arrangements.

     service will be held today, Dec. 30, for Betty Ellen Smith of Eugene, who died Dec. 28 of heart failure. She was 91.

    Smith was born March 30, 1914, in Mesa, Ariz., to Victor and Ellen Hardy Ross. She married Mike Martin on Sept. 30, 1935, in Holbrook, Ariz. He died in 1965. She married Charles Smith on May 29, 1966, in Corvallis. He died in 1980.

    She graduated from high school in Holbrook, Ariz., in 1934 and lived in Holbrook until 1936. She lived in Alsea from 1937 to 1945, then moved to Corvallis. She had lived in Corvallis for 50 years before moving to Eugene in 1995.

    Smith was a homemaker, gardener, farmer and dancer. She belonged to the Rebekah Lodge, Women of the Moose and the Eagles Lodge Auxiliary.

    Survivors include a son, Victor Martin of Eugene; a sister, Blanche Peek of Portland; and five grandchildren.

    Today's service will be held at 10 a.m. at West Lawn Memorial Park in Eugene. England's Eugene Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

    Daniel Guadiana

    SPRINGFIELD - The funeral will be held Dec. 31 for Daniel Torres Guadiana of Springfield, who died Dec. 28 of heart failure. He was 72.

    He was born May 3, 1932, in Santa Rita, N.M., to Estephen and Josephina Torres Guadiana. He married Mercedes Cadena on June 18, 1972, in Los Angeles. She died Oct. 4, 1989.

    Guadiana served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation.  and was awarded Bronze service stars. He had lived in Los Angeles for 23 years. He was employed as a bus driver.

    He enjoyed gardening, making furniture, crafts, auto body/mechanics and modern music. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

    Survivors include two sons, Daniel R. of Los Angeles and Daniel Jr. of Springfield; four daughters, Lucy Guadiana and Mary Guadiana, both of Los Angeles, and Otilia Carlson and Diana Navarrete, both of Springfield; a brother, Manuel of Bayard, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and three great- grandchildren.

    Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today at Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield. Saturday's service will be at 1 p.m. at the funeral home, with burial at Riverside National Cemetery At 921 acres (0 km), Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California is the third-largest cemetery managed by the National Cemetery Administration, and since 2000 has been the most active in the system based on the number  in Riverside, Calif.

    Memorial contributions may be made to Feed the Children.

    Mary McPherson

    Mary McPherson of Hood River, formerly of Eugene, died Dec. 26 of age-related causes. She was 88.

    She was born Aug. 2, 1917, in Heyworth, Ill., to Otto and Jessie McHugh Wolff. She married Austin McPherson in 1948. He died previously.

    McPherson settled in Eugene in the late 1940s. In 1964, the family moved to Albany, then in Roseburg in 1968 and to Hood River in 1991.

    She was a homemaker and had worked in the shipyards in Richmond, Calif., during World War II. She grew vegetables, canned, sewed clothing for her children, crocheted afghans for her grandchildren and enjoyed travel.

    Survivors include two daughters, Melanie Adams of Salem and Sandra Berry of Hood River; two sons, Martin of Albany and Austin of Rye, N.H.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

    No service is planned. Anderson's Tribute Center in Hood River is in charge of arrangements.

    Vera Patchen

    The graveside service will be held Dec. 31 for Vera Mildred Patchen of Oregon City, formerly of Drain, who died Dec. 27 of pneumonia. She was 88.

    Patchen was born May 5, 1917, in Drain, to Floyd and Dora Maude Irwin Robertson. She married John "Cecil" Patchen. He died July 21, 1981.

    She graduated from high school and was a homemaker. She lived in Drain until 2001, when she moved to Oregon City.

    Survivors include two daughters, Linda Painter and Janice O'Rorke; two sisters, Dorothy Gaskill and Lois Long; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

    Saturday's service will be held at 1 p.m. at East Drain Cemetery. Holman-Hankins-Bowker & Waud Funeral Home in Oregon City is in charge of arrangements.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Drain Church of Christ Scholarship Fund.

    Joseph DeFrance

    The funeral Mass will be celebrated Jan. 14 for Joseph DeFrance of Eugene, who died Dec. 2 of age-related causes. He was 96.

    He was born Aug. 19, 1909, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Angelo and Angelina Asturi DeFrancisci. He married Margaret Caridi on Aug. 18, 1935, in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

    DeFrance served in the U.S. Coast Guard and retired as a commander after three years active duty and 26 years reserve duty. He was the founding department head and professor of electronics at New York City Community College.

    His family and friends will remember him "as a warm, loving and gracious gentleman" whose "gentle smile touched all who knew him."

    Survivors include a son, Laurence of Nashville; a daughter, Cynthia Dreyer of Eugene; a brother, Rudy of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Claudette Chiello of Ridgewood, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and one great-grand- child,

    Marie Maasch

    Marie Elizabeth "Betty" Maasch of Eugene died Dec. 24 of age-related causes. She was 85.

    She was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Marie Brown and Norton Deane. She married Norman Maasch on Sept. 7, 1946. He died in 2000.

    Maasch held a bachelor's degree from Queens College in New York New York, state, United States
    New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
     and a master's degree from New York University New York University, mainly in New York City; coeducational; chartered 1831, opened 1832 as the Univ. of the City of New York, renamed 1896. It comprises 13 schools and colleges, maintaining 4 main centers (including the Medical Center) in the city, as well as the . She taught earth science and biology on Long Island, N.Y., until her retirement in 1972.

    She enjoyed baking, sewing, knitting and African violets. She was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Sequim, Wash. Her family will remember "her sweet nature, quick wit and delicious baked goods."

    Survivors include three daughters, Jeanne of Eugene, Linda of Victoria, B.C., and Susan of Bend; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
