There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery). - Ruth Ozella Bassler of Cottage Grove died March 12 of pancreatic cancer pancreatic cancer Malignant tumour of the pancreas. Risk factors include smoking, a diet high in fat, exposure to certain industrial products, and diseases such as diabetes and chronic pancreatitis. Pancreatic cancer is more common in men. . She was 73. She was born Feb. 26, 1932, in San Francisco to Robert and Ruth Fitzgerald Jenkins. She graduated from high school in California and previously lived in Lakewood, Calif. She married Michael J. Bassler in Bellflower, Calif., on Feb. 6, 1970. She worked as a sheriff's office operator and a homemaker. Bassler enjoyed sewing, cooking, doll-making, crocheting, making hats to be donated to the needy and caring for her family. She was a member of Cottage Grove Senior Center. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Pamela Floyd of Vacaville, Calif.; three sons, Richard Graves of Palmdale, Calif., Rodney Graves of Eugene and Ronald Bassler of Redding Redding, city (1990 pop. 66,462), seat of Shasta co., N central Calif., on the Sacramento River; inc. 1872. A principal tourist center for a mountain and lake region, it also has lumbering, food-processing, and diverse manufacturing. , Calif.; two brothers, Robert Jenkins of North Dakota and Donald Jenkins of California; and 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A private family service is planned. Poole-Larsen Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Mary Leathers A memorial service will be March 19 for Mary Edith Leathers of North Bend, formerly of Cottage Grove, who died March 7 of age-related causes. She was 100. She was born July 22, 1904, in Winlock, Wash., to John Wayland and Mary Ettie Bennett Benedict. She graduated from school in Winlock in 1924. She married Charles R. Leathers in Toledo, Wash., on May 14, 1925. He died in 1990. She moved from Winlock to Cottage Grove in 1945. She lived in Florence for several years before moving to North Bend. Leathers was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, handicrafts, canning, growing flowers and making trips to the coast. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Cottage Grove for many years. Leathers was the last surviving sibling of 14 children. Survivors include two sons, Charles of Eugene and Gary of Scappoose, Wash.; and seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 10 great- great-grandchildren. A grandson, Brad, died previously. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove. Saturday's service will be at 11 a.m. at Church of Christ, Sixth and Gibbs streets, in Cottage Grove. Private interment will be at Lane Memorial Gardens in Eugene. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Church of Christ in Cottage Grove. He was born June 9, 1953, in Eugene to Victor Robert "Bob" and Barbara Jean Anderson Moore. He grew up in Corvallis and Medford, graduating from Medford Senior High School in 1971.
