Mary Gillespie

A memorial service will be held Feb. 12 for Mary Matilda Gillespie of Eugene, who died Feb. 5 of age-related causes. She was 104.

Gillespie was born Dec. 4, 1900, in Walterville to John and Salinda Paxton Fountain. She married Vincent Gillespie in Eugene. He died Sept. 19, 1945.

She completed high school and was an office worker for Kaufman Brothers for 27 years. She previously lived in Walterville, Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery).  and Creswell.

Gillespie enjoyed gardening, reading and caring for her family and friends. She belonged to the Obsidians and Neighbors of Woodcraft wood·craft

Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Jones of Eugene; a brother, Carrol Fountain of Springfield; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A son, Brian, died Feb. 22, 2002.

Saturday's service will be held at 1 p.m. at Poole-Larsen Funeral Home in Eugene. A gathering will be held following the service at Gateway Gardens, 178 Commons Drive in Eugene.

Private inurnment will be at Rest-Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

Gertrude Warfel

A memorial service will be held Feb. 9 for Gertrude Agnes Warfel of Springfield, who died Feb. 6 of age-related causes. She was 93.

Warfel was born Jan. 16, 1912, in Cottage Grove to Charles and Elizabeth Orpurd Cochran. She married Orville Warfel in Stevenson, Wash., on Nov. 21, 1936. He died on April 3, 1992.

She graduated from Cottage Grove High School Cottage Grove High School is a public high school located in Cottage Grove, Oregon. It has a newer school building, opened in 2003 to replace the old high school building that was built in 1939 and held its first classes in 1940.  in 1930 and was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, going to church and traveling overseas. She worked as a clerk for the Lane County Fair The Lane County Fair is an annual celebration held in Eugene, Oregon every August featuring food, music and other entertainment. It is held at the Lane County Fairgrounds.  textile department. She was a member of the New Life Center Assembly of God where she was active in women's and prayer groups.

She is survived by a sister, Melba Ross of Shasta Lake For the city, see .

Survivors include her husband; a son, Shelby, and a daughter, Cindy, both of Florence; two brothers, Tom Wilson and Joe Wilson; three sisters, Carylou Holden, Marge and Willa Mae; seven grandchildren; and three great-grand- children.

Services were held, and burial was at Pacific Sunset Cemetery in Florence. Burns Riverside Chapel in Florence is in charge of arrangements.

Beryl Johnson

FLORENCE - The funeral will be held today, Feb. 8, for Beryl May Johnson of Florence, who died Feb. 4 of age-related causes. She was 82.

, Wash., to Eugene and Elsie Howd. She married Charles Sylvester Johnson Sylvester Johnson is the current Police Commissioner of the Philadelphia Police Department. He has been an officer in the department since 1964 and Police Commissioner since 2002.  on May 4, 1946, in Eugene. He died Nov. 14, 2003.

She attended college in Washington for four years. She was a homemaker but worked as a welder during World War II in a Richmond, Calif., shipyard. From the 1940s to 1980, she lived in Eugene, Springfield, Marcola and the Goshen area.

Johnson enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing piano, crossword puzzles, collecting elephant figurines and reading. She loved animals. She belonged to the Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Joanna Coppock of Pittsburg, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Mariam Seyle, also of Pittsburg, Calif., and Freda Moore of Sacramento; eight grandchildren; and several great-grand- children.

Today's service will be held at 3 p.m. at Lane Memorial Funeral Home in Eugene. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Gardens.

SPRINGFIELD - A private family service will be held for Jack Claude Hogan of Springfield, who died Jan. 23 of heart failure. He was 81.

Hogan was born March 11, 1923, in Arkansas City, Kan., to Ashley and Lula May Wiley Hogan. He married Barbara Jean Hogan on Oct. 6, 1946, in Arizona.

He was a truck driver and also worked in heavy construction. He enjoyed fishing and boating, and he belonged to the Teamsters Union and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Fraternal Order of Eagles International is a fraternal organization that was founded on February 6, 1898, in Seattle, Washington by a group of six theater owners including John Cort (the first president), brothers John W. and Tim J. . He previously lived in Los Angeles.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Jackie of Springfield; two daughters, Dianna Minton of Vancouver, Wash., and Sharon Hogan of Camas, Wash.; two brothers, Jim of Wisconsin and Robert of Arizona; a sister, Connie Fay of California; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Claudia Zamanick, died previously.

Pete Petersen

Ramon "Pete" Petersen of Eugene died Feb. 6 of cancer. He was 65.

Petersen was born March 5, 1939, in Council Bluff, Iowa, to Edward and Frances Petersen. He married Anne Kinsey on Nov. 1, 2001, in Eugene.

He enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening, panning for gold, building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes, woodworking and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Matt of Veneta; a daughter, T.R. Kelly of Swisshome; and two grandchildren.

A private service is planned for a later date. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Lucian Marquis

A memorial service will be held March 5 for Lucian C. Marquis of Claremont, Calif., formerly of Eugene, who died Jan. 21 of Parkinson's disease Parkinson's disease or Parkinsonism, degenerative brain disorder first described by the English surgeon James Parkinson in 1817. When there is no known cause, the disease usually appears after age 40 and is referred to as Parkinson's disease. . He was 84.

Marquis was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Stuttgart, Germany, to Paul and Marianne Marquis. He married Jane Slater on Feb. 17, 1947, in Los Angeles.

He was a refugee from Nazi Germany at age 12 and lived in Rome until moving with his family to Beverly Hills, Calif., in 1937. He graduated from Black Mountain College in 1942. He served in the Army's 86th Blackhawk Division from 1943 to 1945. He received a master's degree in 1951 and a doctorate in 1959, both from the University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States).  at Los Angeles.

Marquis was a professor of political science at the University of Oregon The University of Oregon is a public university located in Eugene, Oregon. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities.  from 1955 to 1966 and was the first director of the university's Clark Honors College. In 1965, he led one of the first demonstrations at the university to protest American involvement in the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. .

In 1960, he received the Ersted Award for distinguished teaching. He was a senior Fulbright lecturer at the University of Exeter, England, in 1960-61 and at the University of Turin The University of Turin (Italian Università degli Studi di Torino, UNITO) is a university in the city of Turin in the Piedmont region of north-western Italy. It has 12 faculties and 55 departments. , Italy, in 1965-66. He was a professor at Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif., from 1966 to 1992, and received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Pitzer Alumni Association in 1982.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Joshua of Astoria; and a daughter, Annie of Claremont, Calif.

The March 5 service will be held at 2 p.m. at Scripps College in Claremont The Neptune Society in Burbank, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

Lois Bennett

A memorial service will be held Feb. 11 for Lois Elaine Bennett of Eugene, who died Jan. 12 of age-related causes. She was 91.

She was born Sept. 28, 1913, in Spokane to Ray and Ella Johnson Davies. She married John "Bill" Bennett on Feb. 25, 1935, in San Francisco. He died Jan. 7, 1996.

She grew up in Wallace, Idaho, and graduated from Wallace High School Wallace is a name for several high schools in the English-speaking world, including:

  • Wallace High School (Northern Ireland)
  • Wallace High School, Stirling
 in 1932. She earned a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Idaho The university was formed by the territorial legislature of Idaho on January 30, 1889, and opened its doors on October 3, 1892 with an initial class of 40 students. The first graduating class in 1896 contained two men and two women.  in 1936. She lived in Eugene for 30 years, where she raised her family and worked with her husband in the family insurance and real estate business.

Among her interests were music, playing piano and organ, art and landscape design.

Survivors include three sons, Robert of Eugene, Douglas of Reno, Nev., and John "Jack" of Albuquerque, N.M.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friday's service will be at 2:30 p.m. at Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Relief Nursery.

Lydia Hennen

A memorial service will be held today, Feb. 8, for Lydia Sofhia Hennen of Woodburn, who died Jan. 27 of cancer. She was 89.

Hennen was born Aug. 20, 1915, in Wolford, N.D., to Edward and Ella Ness Humble. She married Jack Hennen on Aug. 20, 1935, in Wolford. He died Oct. 3, 1998.

She graduated from Wolford High School in 1934 and was a longtime homemaker. She lived in Eugene from 1935 to 1973, then moved to Bend. She had lived in Woodburn since 1989, and spent winters in Mesa, Ariz., from 1979 to 1994. An avid sports fan, she also enjoyed playing cards. She was a charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church Our Redeemer Lutheran Church is home to a New Jersey Synod congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Our Redeemer is located in the city of Dumont, New Jersey.

The congregation recently celebrated its 75th anniversary.

Survivors include a son, Jack, of Woodburn; two daughters, Donna Richards of Manson, Wash., and Nancy Tonning of Aloha, Wash.; a sister, Hildegard Johnston of Woodburn; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Today's service will be held at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Woodburn. England's Eugene Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to a hospice.

Patricia Barrett

MAPLETON - A celebration of life will be held Feb. 11 for Patricia "Pat" Barrett of Mapleton, who died Feb. 3 of cancer. She was 68.

, to Henry and Evelynn Biggs Mcguire. She married James Barrett on Aug. 9, 1997, in Mapleton.

She graduated from nursing school in 1956 and worked in emergency rooms as a registered nurse. She lived in San Leandro, Calif., from 1979 to 1996, then moved to Mapleton. She enjoyed travel, bingo and card games and belonged to the Ladies of the Elks, Florence Elks Lodge 1858.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Cynthia Perrin of Grants Pass and Tracey Brown of Ripon, Calif.; three brothers, Neil Honeycutt of Sacramento, Kenneth Honeycutt of Hayward, Calif., and Paul Honeycutt of Arizona; a sister, Elizabeth Nicholson of Hayward, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A son, Wade Cummings, died previously.

Friday's service will be held at 1 p.m. at the Florence Elks Lodge. Inurnment will be in California. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.
