Lucy Jones Dr. Lucy Jones has been a seismologist with the US Geological Survey and a Visiting Research Associate at the Seismological Laboratory of Caltech since 1983. She is currently serving as the Chief Scientist of the USGS Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project for Southern California, developing

 service will be held Feb. 22 for Lucy Matilda Jones of Cottage Grove, who died Feb. 22 of age-related causes. She was 84.

Jones was born Oct. 26, 1919, in a logging camp near Mosby Creek to Albert and Virgie Rissue. She married Wes Smith in September of 1937. He died in May of 1945. She married Gordon Grable on July 10, 1946. He died in 1970. She married Voleney Jones on July 24, 1976. He died in January of 1991.

She was a lifetime resident of Cottage Grove. She graduated from high school. She worked as a circle burner in the Vancouver, Wash., shipyards during World War II. She owned and operated Grable's Gear and Machine Shop since 1946.

She was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Trinity Lutheran Church can refer to one of several churches listed in the United States National Register of Historic Places:

. She enjoyed painting, sewing and trips to the coast. She especially enjoyed her grandchildren and her great-grand- children.

She will be remembered as an honest, generous, hardworking and loving pioneer woman.

Survivors include a son, Michael Grable of Cottage Grove; a brother, George Rissue of Springfield; five grandchildren; and 11 great-grand- children.

Wednesday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Sears Cemetery in Cottage Grove. Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove is in charge of arrangements.

Gilbert Slonecker

FLORENCE - The funeral will be held Feb. 25 for Gilbert Carl "Bud" Slonecker of Florence, who died Feb. 18 of pneumonia. He was 78.

Slonecker was born March 24, 1925, in Reedsport to Roy and Zella Smith Slonecker. He married Edna "Cathy" Hartman in Vancouver, Wash., on Feb. 18, 1952. She died July 28, 1992.

He was a lifetime Oregonian. He was a veteran and served as a skipper in the Pacific Theater Pacific Theater or Pacific Theatre may refer to

  • Pacific Ocean theater of World War II
 during World War II and as a training officer in the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. .

He worked as a commercial fisherman, carpenter and construction worker.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting and high school athletics.

Survivors include six sons, Robert Hartman of Aberdeen, Wash., Roy Slonecker of Eugene, Russell, Randy and Rocky Slonecker, all of Florence and Richard Slonecker of Logsden, Ore.; numerous grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Wednesday's service, with a potluck to follow, will be held at 1 p.m. at the Florence Christian Church. Burns' Riverside Chapel/Florence Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Barbara Kiesow

A memorial service will be held Feb. 26 for Barbara Alice "Bea" Kiesow of Eugene, who died Feb. 19 of age-related causes. She was 85.

Kiesow was born Jan. 7, 1919, in Weiser, Idaho Weiser is a city in the rural southwestern part of the U.S. state of Idaho and the seat of Washington County.GR6 With its mild climate, the city supports farm, orchard, and livestock endeavors in the vicinity. , to Walter and Della Evans Bagley. She married Helmuth "Hal" Kiesow in Eugene on Sept. 26, 1958.

She lived in this area for 60 years. She worked as a hairdresser and owned a salon, Bea's For Beauty. She belonged to a state organization of beauticians and barbers. She was a member of the Good Shepherd Good Shepherd

 Lutheran Church in Eugene, where she enjoyed attending services and quilting quilting, form of needlework, almost always created by women, most of them anonymous, in which two layers of fabric on either side of an interlining (batting) are sewn together, usually with a pattern of back or running (quilting) stitches that hold the layers  with other members.

She also enjoyed cooking and visiting the Oregon Coast. She especially enjoyed her friends and family.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Betty Critzer of Noti; two stepdaughters, Janet Fernandez of Issaquah, Wash., and Kathy Kleiber of Longview, Wash.; a stepson step·son
