Robert Vitus

ELMIRA - The funeral Mass will be held Oct. 15 for Robert "Bob" C. Vitus of Elmira, who died Oct. 10 of pseudomonas Pseudomonas

A genus of gram-negative, nonsporeforming, rod-shaped bacteria. Motile species possess polar flagella. They are strictly aerobic, but some members do respire anaerobically in the presence of nitrate.
. He was 82.

Vitus was born Aug. 7, 1921, in Eugene to Robert and Elma Furman Vitus. He married Joyce Dailey in Eugene on Feb. 2, 1957. Vitus was a lifelong resident of Eugene and graduated from Eugene High School. He later served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Vitus was a co-founder of Vitus Machine Shop. He enjoyed woodworking and gardening. He was a former member of the St. Vincent de Paul Vin·cent de Paul   , Saint 1581-1660.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Michael of Eugene and Troy, Gordon and Greg, all of Elmira; two daughters, Nadine Core of Elmira and Maryann Fauble of Eugene; a brother, Greg of Elmira; 16 grandchildren; and three great-grand- children.

A rosary will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home. Wednesday's Mass will be at 11 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Veneta.

Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

This devotion is predominantly used in the Roman Catholic Church and also used in the Anglican Church.

SPRINGFIELD - A celebration of life will be held Oct. 17 for William "Bill" Floyd Jones of Springfield, who died Oct. 10 of complications of heart disease. He was 62.

Jones was born July 26, 1941, in French Camp, Calif., to Frank and Florence William Jones.

He lived in California before moving to Walterville in 1984.

Jones was in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Cuban Missile Crisis Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962, major cold war confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. After the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the USSR increased its support of Fidel Castro's Cuban regime, and in the summer of 1962, Nikita Khrushchev secretly decided to , the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam.  and later was stationed in Germany for three years.

He retired with the U.S. Army Reserves. He worked as a security officer.

He enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping, reading military magazines and watching baseball and football.

He was active with the Eugene Moose Lodge and attended First Methodist Church in Springfield.

Survivors include his partner, Betty Joe Brown; a son, Frank of Springfield; and a brother, Frank of Sunnyvale, Calif. A brother, John, died previously.

Friday's service will be at 3 p.m. at the Eugene Moose Lodge.

Clayton Swenson

A memorial service will be held Oct. 15 for Clayton Paul Swenson of Eugene, who died Oct. 11 of Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia.  and complications from respiratory failure Respiratory Failure Definition

. He was 74.

Swenson was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Portland, to Paul and Elizabeth Kelly Swenson.

He married Elizabeth Chumbley in San Diego. She died on March 25, 2003.

He lived in Santa Cruz, Calif., before moving to Albany in 1984 and later to Springfield and Eugene.

Swenson was in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and served in the Korean and Vietnam wars.

He later worked for General Dynamics and the San Diego Port Authority.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, target pistol shooting, tinkering and woodworking. Swenson was a member of the American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  and the Fleet Reserve Association.

He was also a Little League baseball coach and attended Lutheran church.

Survivors include a son, Steven of Eugene; a daughter, Rachel Walden of Olympia, Wash.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Wednesday's memorial service is at 2 p.m. at England's Eugene Memorial Chapel. His ashes will be scattered at sea off Point Loma in San Diego.

England's Eugene Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the McKenzie-Willamette Alzheimer's support group.
