Phyllis Spatz

SPRINGFIELD - A memorial service will be held July 9 for Phyllis Emma Spatz of Springfield, who died July 5 of cancer. She was 83.

Spatz was born March 25, 1922, in Springfield, to Bruce and Nora Olson Lansbery. She married Russell Hardisty on June 26, 1947, in Vancouver, Wash. He died in 1966. She married Garold Spatz on June 21, 1981, in Grants Pass. He died in 1999.

She graduated from Oakridge High School in 1940, then attended Erby Beauty School in Eugene. She later owned and operated a beauty shop in Westfir for eight years and also worked in the snack bar and other areas at Timber Bowl in Springfield for about 25 years. She previously lived in Westfir, Cottage Grove Cottage Grove, village (1990 pop. 22,935), Washington co., SE Minn., near the St. Croix River; inc. 1965. There is farming (cattle, sheep, corn, and soybeans) and manufacturing (chemicals and machinery). , Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley,  and Marcola.

An avid bowler for many years, she was inducted into the Eugene Women's Bowling Hall of Fame on March 16, 2002. She belonged to the Women's International Bowling Congress The Women's International Bowling Congress (WIBC) was an organization for women bowlers formed in 1917 as a counterpart to the American Bowling Congress (ABC).

In 2005, the WIBC merged with the ABC and the Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA) to form the United States
 and was elected a director of the Women's Bowling Association. She had coached in a junior bowling league and had been director, secretary and treasurer of several bowling leagues at Timber Bowl. Spatz enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, Seattle Mariners The Seattle Mariners are a professional baseball team based in Seattle, Washington. The Mariners are a member of the Western Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Mariners have played in Safeco Field.  baseball, Portland Trail Blazers The Portland Trail Blazers are a professional basketball team based in Portland, Oregon. They play in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The franchise, based in Portland throughout its existence, entered the league in 1970 and has won the NBA Championship once, in 1977.  basketball and her grandchildren's sporting events.

Survivors include two sons, Jim Hardisty of Springfield and Jeff Hardisty of Eugene; two daughters, Jo Ellen Zaklan and Jerri Bour,, both of Springfield; a brother, Bruce Lansbery of Boise; a sister, Eileen Wright of Milwaukie; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Saturday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at Major Family Funeral Home in Springfield. A reception will follow at Willamalane Adult Activity Center in Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cascade Hospice, in care of McKenzie-Willamette Hospital in Springfield.

Joyce Saunders

A memorial service will be held July 10 for Joyce V. Saunders of Eugene, who died June 22 of age-related causes. She was 77.

Saunders was born Aug. 19, 1927, in Churchs Ferry, N.D., to Paul and Bertha Barenscher Swartz. She married George Saunders George Saunders (born December 2, 1958) is an acclaimed American writer of short stories. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, Harper's, and GQ, among others.  on April 6, 1952, in Eugene. He died May 11, 2002.

She graduated from Eugene High School in 1946 and owned the Saunders farm. She was a homemaker and had worked for the Lane County appraisal department. She enjoyed oil painting, gardening, reading, crafts and shopping. She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star The Order of the Eastern Star is the largest fraternal organization in the world that both men and women can join. It was established in 1850 by Rob Morris, a lawyer and educator from Boston, Massachusetts who had been an official with the Freemasons. , the Rhododendron rhododendron (rō'dədĕn`drən) [Gr.,=rose tree], any plant of the genus Rhododendron, shrubs of the family Ericaceae (heath family) found chiefly in mountainous areas of the arctic and north temperate regions and also of the  Society and Nomads RV Association.

Survivors include two sons, George of Portland and Mark of Roseburg; two brothers, Delmer Swartz and Lowell Swartz, both of Eugene; a sister, Phyllis Taylor of Springfield; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A son, Edward, died in April 2005.

Sunday's service will be held at 3 p.m. at Springfield Lutheran Church.

Paul Bassford

Stanley Harvey Eisen (born January 20, 1952, Queens, New York) known by his stage name Paul Stanley
 Bassford of Surprise, Ariz., formerly of Springfield, died June 24 of age-related causes. He was 77.

Bassford was born Feb. 13, 1928, in Phoenix, Ariz. He married Mary Ellen Bassford on Dec. 21, 1950, in Phoenix.

He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948, serving as a medical corpsman corps·man

. He graduated from Baylor University Baylor University, mainly at Waco, Tex.; coeducational; chartered and opened 1845 by Baptists (see Baylor, Robert E. B.) at Independence, moved 1886 and absorbed Waco Univ. (chartered 1861). The library has a noted Robert Browning collection.  in 1951 and from Baylor Medical School in Houston in 1955.

Bassford lived in Springfield for 42 years. He worked as a psychiatrist for 45 years, including providing psychiatric evaluations in criminal court cases in Lane County. He had lived in Surprise, Ariz., for the past eight years.

He was a past recipient of the Springfield First Citizen award and Oregon Young Man of the Year award. He served on the board of Willamalane from 1974 to 1977. He enjoyed piloting, boating, camping, snow skiing, water skiing water skiing, sport of riding on skis along the water's surface while being towed by a motorboat. It probably originated on the French Riviera in the early 1920s, and was known in the United States by 1927.  and golf. He was a past International Director of the Lions Club and was active in developing youth exchange programs with Austria.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Paul III Paul III, 1468–1549, pope (1534–49), a Roman named Alessandro Farnese; successor of Clement VII. He was created cardinal by Alexander VI, and his influence increased steadily.  of Bend; two daughters, Cynthia Backlund of Eugene and Sandra Duncan of Sunnyvale, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

The funeral was held June 28 in Phoenix, Ariz., with burial in the Veterans Administration Memorial Cemetery, also in Phoenix. Camino del Sol Funeral Chapel in Sun City, Ariz., was in charge of arrangements.

Yates was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Cuervo, N.M., to Leonard and Ola Jones Yates. He married Katherine Coblentz on July 28, 1979, in Eugene.

He studied at Rocky Mountain College Rocky Mountain College (informal: Rocky or RMC), located in Billings, Montana, is a private comprehensive college offering more than 25 liberal arts- and professionally-oriented majors. In fall 2006, the college had 898 enrolled students.  in Montana and at Oregon State University Oregon State University, at Corvallis; land-grant and state supported; coeducational; chartered 1858 as Corvallis College, opened 1865. In 1868 it was designated Oregon's land-grant agricultural college and was taken over completely by the state in 1885.  in Corvallis. He worked as a teacher at Cascade Middle School and Willamette High School Willamette High School is a school in Eugene, Oregon.

Dora Messer

A celebration of life will be held July 8 for Dora Messer of Eugene, who died July 5 of age-related causes. She was 87.

Messer was born May 19, 1918, in Dallas, S.D., to Joseph and Amanda Hay Huggins. She married Roy Messer on Nov. 19, 1936, in Olathe, Kan. He died July 21, 1985.

She was a homemaker and had worked for a cannery and as a seamstress. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and spending time with her family.

Survivors include two sons, Roy Jr. and Troy, both of Eugene; a daughter, Wanda Davidson of Halsey; two sisters, Ida Clabo of Roseburg and Leona Malay of Weiser, Idaho; 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. today, July 7, and from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday, at Lane Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home in Eugene.

Friday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Gardens.

Lois Eckles

Lois Claire Eckles of Eugene died July 1 of pulmonary disease. She was 76.

Eckles was born Nov. 21, 1928, in San Bernardino, Calif. She married Edward Eckles on May 21, 1965, in Reno, Nev. He died in 2000.

She had lived in the Eugene-Springfield area for 15 years and previously lived in San Bernardino, Hayward, Calif., Susanville, Calif., and El Paso, Texas. She retired as a secretary for Bausch & Lomb. She enjoyed reading and scrapbooking.

Survivors include three daughters, Lois Newcombe and Becky Humble, both of Eugene and Susan Fredrickson of Highland, Calif.; a brother, Robert Campbell of Hemet, Calif.; a sister, Helen Brotchie of San Bernardino; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Dale Collis

Collis was born March 11, 1939, in Bismarck, N.D., to William and Elda Neuharth Collis. He married Marilyn Sergeant on June 24, 1966, in Ontario, Calif.

He lived in North Dakota, Montana, Oregon and Southern California in his early life. He served in the Air Force at Sheppard Air Force Base Sheppard Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base adjacent to Wichita Falls, Texas. It is home of the 82d Training Wing and the 80th Flying Training Wing , home of the Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) Program.  in Texas. He attended two years of Bible college and two years at a community college.

He worked as an air conditioning contractor for 31 years and as a farmer. He was a worker at a Christian home for children when he lived in Colorado Springs, Colo. He also had lived in Upland and Alta Loma, both in California, and in Limon, Colo. He had lived in Creswell for 13 years. He also worked with American Image Marketing Corp.

He enjoyed Bible study, chess, growing plants, helping others with nutrition and health, recycling and repairing equipment. He was a member of Willamette Bible Chapel.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Esther Lee of Eugene, Debbie Collis of Creswell and Ruth Collis of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; two sons, Daniel of Springfield and David of Creswell; two brothers, Wayne of Riverside, Calif., and Mel of Mexico; a sister, Judi McIntosh of Snohomish, ; and six grandchildren.

Saturday's service will be held at 3 p.m. at Willamette Bible Chapel in Eugene. Burial will be in Pioneer Cemetery in Creswell.

Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Lisa Welty

A memorial service will be held today, July 7, for Lisa Lane Welty of Salem, formerly of Eugene, who died June 30 of cancer. She was 45.

Welty was born Feb. 2, 1960, in Springfield, to Bill and Nancy Harper Lane. She married Jim Welty on Aug. 14, 1982.

She lived in Redmond and then in Klamath Falls, where she graduated from Henley High School in 1978. She graduated from Oregon State University in 1982. She had been a legal secretary for the Oregon Department of Justice since 1998. She previously lived in Eugene and Ashland. She was active in 4-H Club activities and enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband; two children, Tyler Welty and Sam Welty, both also of Salem; her parents, of Halsey; and a brother, Jeff Lane of Eugene.

Today's service will be held at 2 p.m. at Morningside United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism).  in Salem.

"Percy" Meyers

The funeral Mass will be celebrated July 13 for Permilla "Percy" Meyers of Eugene, who died July 5 of age-related causes. She was 84.

Meyers was born Aug. 13, 1920, in Petersburg, Iowa, to Andrew and Caroline Roling Mormann. She married Kenneth Meyers on Oct. 12, 1942. He died Aug. 4, 1995.

She graduated from high school in Elma, Iowa, and worked as a waitress before marrying. She lived in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from 1937 to 1976 and in Mission, Texas from 1986 to 1999. She was a homemaker and also assisted her husband in their construction business. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, cards and bingo with friends. She belonged to St. Paul Catholic Church.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne of Eugene and Ralph of Atlanta; a sister, Rosemary Kremer of Cedar Rapids; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Wednesday's service will be held at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church. Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Inurnment will be in Texas.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Sacred Heart.

Lynn E. Hagues, 45, of Springfield, died June 28. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home.
