Chester Wienecke

SPRINGFIELD - A gathering of friends and family will be held Oct. 13 for Chester Lee Wienecke of Springfield who died Oct. 9 of age-related causes. He was 87.

Wienecke was born Jan. 24, 1917, in Hillsboro, to Carl and Mae Bledsoe Wienecke. He married Eleanor Violet Mack on Aug. 30, 1940, in Stevens, Wash. She died Jan. 28, 1995.

He grew up and was educated in Vernonia. He worked as a lumber grader at Weyerhaeuser in Springfield for 25 years. He enjoyed playing card games and Scrabble, fishing, hunting, woodworking and woodcarving.

Survivors include two daughters, Hazel Kerns and Laura Price, both of Springfield; a son, Darrel of Springfield; a brother, Milbert of Eugene; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A son, Darwin, died in 1977 and a grandson, Steven Price, also died previously.

Wednesday's gathering will be at 2:30 p.m. at 87850 Lupe Lane, Springfield. Private entombment will be in Springfield Memorial Gardens. Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elwood Rear

A memorial service will be held Oct. 16 for Elwood Garfield "Garf" Rear of Eugene who died Oct. 10 of Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (ăls`hī'mərz, ôls–), degenerative disease of nerve cells in the cerebral cortex that leads to atrophy of the brain and senile dementia. . He was 91.

Rear was born Nov. 27, 1912, in Kamsack, Saskatchewan Kamsack, Saskatchewan, Canada is a town located in the Assiniboine River Valley where the Assiniboine River joins the Whitesand River. The fertile land, scenic location and great weather make Kamsack "The Garden Of Saskatchewan". , Canada, to Clinton and Elizabeth Jamieson Rear. He married Mabel Elsie Eidson on May 1, 1936, in Eugene.

The university was founded in 1876, graduating its first class two years later. The University of Oregon is one of 60 members of the Association of American Universities. . He served in the Oregon National Guard.

He was superintendent at Multnomah Ironworks in Portland, was a farmer and was co-founder of Rears Manufacturing Company.

He was a pilot, having learned to fly at age 50. He learned to ski at age 65. He was an avid reader, travelled to Australia, New Zealand New Zealand (zē`lənd), island country (2005 est. pop. 4,035,000), 104,454 sq mi (270,534 sq km), in the S Pacific Ocean, over 1,000 mi (1,600 km) SE of Australia. The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland. , Fiji and the British Isles British Isles: see Great Britain; Ireland.  and enjoyed family times at a cabin near Bend. He was a member of Peace Presbyterian Church. His family remembers him for his sweet and humble nature and his respect for others.

Survivors include his wife; six daughters, Susanne Rear of Vida, Janet Broadsword, Nancy Killough and Marilee George, all of Eugene, Kathleen Valentine of Lake Oswego Lake Os·we·go  

A city of northwest Oregon, a residential suburb of Portland. Population: 35,800.
 and Rebecca Wobbe of Noti; two sons, Robert and Chuck, both of Eugene; a brother, James of Junction City Junction City, city (1990 pop. 20,604), seat of Geary co., NE Kans., at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill rivers; inc. 1859. The rail, trade, and processing center of an agricultural and dairy area, it grew as the supply point for nearby Fort Riley, ; a sister, Mary Green Mary Green is a British television presenter currently presenting Thames Valley Tonight on ITV Thames Valley, covering the Central South and Meridian West regions.  of Eugene; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. One son, Jeffrey, died previously.

Saturday's memorial service will be at 1 p.m. at Peace Presbyterian Church in Eugene. Private burial will be at West Lawn Cemetery in Eugene. England's Eugene Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Virel Slaton

A memorial service will be held Oct. 16 for Virel Slaton of Eugene who died Oct. 4 of a stroke. She was 83.

Slaton was born April 18, 1921, in Boynton, Okla., to Tom and Ruby Douglas Pope. She married Harvey Slaton on Dec. 24, 1937. He died Dec. 3, 2003.

She moved to Eugene in 1950 and worked as a telephone supervisor for Pacific Northwest Bell Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company provided telephone services in the states of Oregon, Washington, and northern Idaho.

Pacific Northwest Bell was created on July 1, 1961, when the Bell telephone operations in northern Idaho, Oregon, and Washington state were split off
 for 19 years. She enjoyed gardening, painting and sewing. She belonged to the Independent Order of Foresters.

She is survived by a daughter, Kay Slaton of Eugene.

Saturday's service will be at 10:30 a.m. in River Road Baptist Church in Eugene. Andreason's Cremation cremation, disposal of a corpse by fire. It has been found among the chiefdoms of the Pacific Northwest, among Northern Athapascan bands in Alaska, and among Canadian cultural groups.  & Burial Service in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

Janet Hedgepeth

REEDSPORT - A celebration of life will be today, Oct. 12, for Janet Mae "Jan" Hedgepeth of Reedsport who died Oct. 9 of cancer. She was 73.

Hedgepeth was born July 15, 1931, in Los Angeles, to George and Grace McCann. She married Thomas "Bud" Hedgepeth on Nov. 16, 1947, in Hemet, Calif.

She lived in Grants Pass before moving to Eugene. She owned and operated J&W Towing Service in Eugene for 17 years. She next moved to Reedsport, where she owned and operated the Sportsman Cannery for 13 years. She worked for the U.S. Forest Service for several years in Juneau, Alaska, and moved back to Reedsport in 1990.

She enjoyed church activities, including performing vocal solos and serving on various committees. She also enjoyed knitting, music, walking on the beach and Oregon Ducks sports.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Shari Morris of North Bend and Deborah Ingman of Mount Vernon, Wash.; two sons, Kevin of North Bend and Michael of Marysville, Wash.; a sister, Joyce Wilcox of Eastern Oregon; 10 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren.

Today's service will be at 11 a.m. in the Reedsport Church of God. Burial will be in the Scottsburg Cemetery in Scottsburg. North Bend Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society American Cancer Society,

Tommy Sorrels

A celebration of life will be Oct. 16 for Tommy R. Sorrels of Eugene who died Oct. 7 of a heart attack. He was 54.

Sorrels was born April 2, 1950, in San Bernardino, Calif., to Jimmie and Christine Richmond Sorrels. He and his wife, Joni, were married on Jan. 18, 1969, in Fontana, Calif.

He graduated from high school and served in the Army in Vietnam. He lived in Fontana until 1978, then moved to Eugene. He worked in concrete construction. He enjoyed old cars, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, of Dolan Springs, Ariz.; two sons, Timothy of Grants Pass and Jeff of Henderson, Nev.; two sisters, Sue Rogers of Lakehills, Texas, and Patty Watson, also of Dolan Springs; and three grand- children.

Saturday's celebration will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. in the family home. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.

He had lived in Cottage Grove for five years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, skateboarding, animals, the outdoors, fishing and hunting. He was a student at River Front School in Eugene.

Survivors include his father, of Florence, Ariz.; his grandparents/adoptive parents, John and Doris Croskey of Cottage Grove; his grandparents, Harold and Millie Goings of Eager, Ariz.; four sisters, Patricia Nicholas and Amber Woirhaye, both of Mesa, Ariz., Nicole Newman of Henderson, Nev., and Mindy Croskey of Grand Rapids, Minn.; and six brothers, Michael Goings, Shawn Croskey, Jeremy Croskey and Brett Croskey, all of Mesa, Ariz., Ryan Croskey of Payson, Ariz., and Corey Croskey of Tucson, Ariz.

Thursday's service will be at 3:30 p.m. in Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.

Paul Berry

OAKRIDGE - A celebration of life will be held Oct. 16 for Paul M. Berry of Oakridge who died Oct. 7 of cancer. He was 49.

Berry was born July 23, 1955, at Nellis Air Force Base Nellis Air Force Base (IATA: LSV, ICAO: KLSV) is a United States Air Force base, in Clark County, Nevada, on the northeast side of Las Vegas. It is also treated as a census-designated place by the United States Census for statistical purposes, and so specific  in Nevada to Paul and Audrey Lattimer Berry. He married Elaine Fitzhugh on Feb. 10, 1997, in Oakridge.

He lived in Las Vegas, Nev., until he was 18, then moved to Oregon. He worked as a driver and salesperson for Pepsi Bottling Co. He enjoyed hiking, mountain biking mountain biking Sports medicine A sport in which participants use specialized bicycles to navigate rough, steep trails covered with unforgiving rocks Injury risk Concussions, fractures, death.
