He lived his whole life on the family's Century Farm, which was established by a donation land claim in 1848. He graduated from Yoncalla High School in 1949. He married Sylvia Thurston in Payette, Idaho Payette is a small city in southwestern Idaho, United States. The population was 7,054 at the 2000 census.
