Renowned pioneer California real estate broker, Herbert Hawkins, 76, died peacefully at home in Newport Beach, surrounded by his wife and family on Wednesday afternoon Aug. 18, 1999, at 1:05 p.m.

Born the son of Herbert P. and Florence (Whitehead) Hawkins in Paducah, Ky., on March 19, 1923, he was educated at Tilghman High School in Paducah, Illinois Institute of Technology Illinois Institute of Technology, in Chicago; coeducational; founded 1940 by a merger of Armour Institute of Technology (founded 1892) and Lewis Institute (1896).  in Chicago and Columbia University in New York City New York City: see New York, city.

At retirement in 1980, the Herbert Hawkins Co. included 120 brokerage offices throughout California, Fortress Escrow Co., and Trinity Mortgage Co., with more than 4,200 employees and sales associates.

Serving the industry, he traveled throughout the states as an educational speaker for the California Association of Realtors and was elected president of the West San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire.  Board of Realtors. He also served as a founding director of the California Land Title Co. and as a director of Continental Lawyers Title Co.

Hawkins met Betty Bloom, a Pasadena school teacher on a blind date. She became his bride in June of 1950, when they were married in San Marino at St. Edmund's Episcopal Church. Hawkins celebrated 49 wonderful anniversaries with Betty; their last one was celebrated in June 1999, at Carmel-by-the-Sea, the location of their honeymoon.

A man of deep and resolute faith, he was an active lay leader at Lake Avenue Congregational Church in Pasadena, Southwest Community Church in Palm Desert, St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, and St. James Episcopal Church in Newport Beach.

Hawkins was privileged to serve 20 years on the board of directors of World Vision, the second largest Christian relief organization in the United States, and as a director and regular speaker for the Christian Business Men's Committee International.

He will be remembered as one who loved interacting with people. Teaching, speaking, leading, competing and making new friends were his favorite activities. An avid golf and tennis player, he enjoyed many wonderful friendships at the San Gabriel Country Club, The Balboa Bay Club The Balboa Bay Club & Resort is in Newport Beach, California on 15 waterfront acres and was founded in 1948. He is survived by those he loved most: his beloved wife Betty; his son and daughter-in-law, Preston and Carrie Hawkins of Pasadena; his daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Elliot Ichinose of San Juan Capistrano San Juan Capistrano (săn wän kăpĭsträ`nō), city (1990 pop. 26,183), Orange co., S Calif.; inc. 1961. San Juan Capistrano has some manufactures, including aircraft parts, medical apparatus, and boats, but the economy is ; his sister and brother-in-law, Lucy and Richard Pouliot; grandchildren, Patrick (and wife Ting), Anne, Matthew, Michelle and Megan; nieces, nephews and many, many dear friends.

There will be a viewing at Pacific View Memorial Park, 3500 Pacific View Dr., Newport Beach, on Sunday, Aug. 22, 1999 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial services will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 3209 Via Lido, Newport Beach, Calif. 92663, on Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Hawkins requested that any memorial gifts be used for the ministry of his beloved church. Make any gifts to the St. James Memorial Fund at the above address.
