OAK PARK SCHOOL WILL THROW BASH TO THANK COMMUNITY : PICNIC TO SALUTE NEWLY WON HONOR.

Medea Creek Middle School is throwing a picnic tonight and the entire community is invited.

The school was one of 266 public and private secondary schools selected as a National Blue Ribbon blue ribbon

The picnic at the field behind the school is a way to thank the entire Oak Park community for contributing to the school's success, said Assistant Principal Liz Silverman.

``It's a very proud moment,'' she said. ``It's been a really exciting experience for us. I think it's the recognition that what we attempted is working.''

Medea Creek applied for the award after being recognized as a California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  Distinguished School in 1994. In the 33-page application, Medea Creek officials touted changes in curriculum, an innovative block class schedule, use of computers and other technology, and parent and community involvement.

Silverman described the school's effort as ``creating an atmosphere where all students can be successful.''

With 700 students in grades six through eight, Medea Creek parents and educators are planning a picnic for 2,000 at 6 p.m. today. The school is at 1002 Doubletree dou·ble·tree

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic meal and local vendors will sell hamburgers, pizzas and desserts.
